Republican presidential candidate and former New York Gov. George Pataki, left, talks with Michael Fairbrother, owner of Moonlight Meadery in Londonderry, during a campaign stop Monday.

After visiting Londonderry Freezer Warehouse, Pataki then warmed up across town at Moonlight Meadery.

That’s where owners Michael Fairbrother and Berniece Van Der Berg introduced the former governor to their vast selection of mead. Pataki grabbed a wine glass and put his taste buds to the test.

“That stuff is great — I might stay here all afternoon,” he joked.

Fairbrother told of how his rapidly growing, 10-employee business is affected by state regulations and business taxes that make it tough for the small-business owner to succeed.

“The taxes are incredibly high,” Fairbrother said.

He showed Pataki the 5-gallon glass jug in which he made his first batch of mead 20 years ago.

Fairbrother opened Moonlight Meadery in 2010 and since then, the company has produced 250,000 bottles of mead.
