I was on video.google.com today, and I was pleasantly surprised to came across this video. It's the episode of Good Eats where Alton Brown makes homebrewed beer. Good Eats is my favorite show, and this episode piqued my interest in homebrewing when I saw it a few years ago, before I was a homebrewer myself.

Alton does and says a few things that will raise red flags in the minds of homebrewing enthusiasts, but the episode is what it is. It's meant to show the viewers that there's nothing magic about making beer, and that they could do it themselves. Hey, it worked on me. :)

Hmmmm, I'm not sure everyone is going to agree with his comments about honey at the beginning. ;)

I do love Alton's show. Informative, entertaining, good TV. But, WOW, this was NOT one of his better episodes!

Ok, sure, the point is to say "Look, it's easy! You can do this!" Still, let's count...

1. He can't pronounce wort.
2. He poured refrigerated yeast directly into warm wort, against the directions of his LHBS.
3. No caution against oxygenation when transferring between fermenters for priming.
4...

...you know what, let's not count. He does provide a lot of great info, and does a decent job of making it look like the fun, affordable hobby we all know it to be. I'll choose to believe that a later episode will deal with brewing addiction! ;D

Yeah, there were some definite scary parts. My favorites:
1 did he just boil the grain? ahhh!!!
2 did he just say all the yeast are dead after a week? and carbonation is then magic???

But hey, that's not the point, as you said. Alton still rules!

Yeah, for me the low point was probably leaving the specialty grains in there for the entire boil. ??? That's probably one Alton Brown recipe I won't be trying at home. My Good Eats fish and chips came out great though. Ditto on the pan seared steak. I think I'll try makeing Good Eats braised pork ribs next. Oh, and for those of you who do a full boil with propane burner and a huge pot, there's an episode on YouTube about deep frying a turkey that you might find interesting, since you already have all the hardware. :)
