Ok, so the story has a modern twist to it...

There's something new on the Texas market that's thousands of years old... and talk about pedigrees. The recipe for Midas Touch is based on residue archaeologists found 39 years ago in the tomb of the real King Midas, or at least a close relative.

Has anybody tried this, sounds interesting.

For those of you who don't venture past the forums here's a link to some additional information on this subject.

Dan McFeeley has also made mention of good old Midas in a couple of his bibliographies that you can get to by going to the main site and entering MIDAS in the search tool for the main site located toward the top right of the browser screen.

I've made things similar to this based on things that I've seen in articles and books, etc. I've done pyments with with dates, raisins and malt extract in them and some cysers with a bit of red grape juice as well, but not this same recipe. They all had a pretty good taste, but nothing I'd run out and mass produce.

Cheers,

Oskaar

In my opinion this is an awesome brew. Honey flavors are slight, fruity nose, smooth finish and not alcohol burn at all. Dogfish Head do a nice job with this one. It is limited in production and in the MD/DC area it is about $12 for a 4 pack so not something to chug. Pour in a tulip shaped glass, sit back and enjoy the brew.

I've had it, it's good! I love everything Dogfish Head brews. But, I'd go for a 90 minute IPA over the Midas Touch anyday! (But that's just my opinion.)
I have to say, it was the fact that Midas Touch sounded like mead that made me try it in the first place. Thanks for the link to the article, Wrath...I had no idea that is how they formulated this recipe!

I have been enjoying this brew for awhile. I'm not a "hophead" as brewers go so this one is great. They have another limited release called Chatau Jiahu that is great as well. So far it is only available in 750's but well worth it. Definately not a chugging brew.:)

Page through the Patron Brewlogs to find Wayne's own Jiahu mead! :D

The main reason to take the time and browse the main website is that you're shortchanging yourself on both content and acumen if you don't search, read and digest the content from GotMead.Com.

If you haven't read the Newbie's Guide, you should. If you haven't gone through the MLD back issues archives and current editions, you should. This will help to round out your knowledge base when it comes to mead and help you to develop your own style as well as giving you different ideas about mead than you will find of the forums.

Cheers, Oskaar

Midas Touch is an awesome brew! But thats my opinion, because I am one of the brewers at Dogfish Head. Lol. The Chatau Jiahu is in the fermenter right now, should be released in late summer early fall.

Cheers,
Jon

Great to hear from you, Jon. How did the brewery collaborate with Patrick McGovern to create the recipe for Jiahu? Were there some quantitative data in the analyses that helped you out? He's one fascinating guy, and very generous with his knowledge, from my experience.

Ken

Hey Ken,

Well, I think Dan answered your questions with the article he presented about the Midas Touch. The Jiahu brew was done the same way, a small test batch was brewed at the pub along with the helpful knowledge of Professor McGovern. Later we brewed a 200 bbl batch at the main brewery. We brewed it with barley, rice syrup, orange blossom honey, hawthorn berry powder, muscat grape juice, and fermented it with a Sake yeast. The original "recipe" from 9000 yrs ago did not contain barley in it, but we had to add it to make the beverage more beer like. I don't really know about the data and analysis the he used, we mainly base the recipe on the residue of what he does find in the vessels and then put it together.

Cheers,
Jon

Jon, remember I've got a couple of bottles of Wolf Moon set aside for you, to trade for some of that new Jiahu.

When do you want to do the swap? Also, can you PM me with your address again? I had it from our initial talk about a trade, but I can't seem to find it now.
