how hard would it be to start up a meadery in california?
where is a good place to set up shop, how much space would i need to produce a profitable volume
i just need to get an idea of the scope of things
 
That's really going to depend on what your business plan, seed capital and recipe formulations for starters. Suffice to say this is a very big subject and those are really general questions you're asking.

On the main page of the Gotmead site, there is a page tab that is " Starting a Meadery ", this will give you most information that you need. At least it is a starting point reguardless. I think that your questions are general due to you being new to this and questions at the beginning are usually always general...so press on.

I have been chatting with the nice folks at Rabbitsfoot, they are fair local to my office. On their front page is a "to learn how to start a winery" link...
