Cat Person here!

Does your community have an organization that tends to feral cats? Oftentimes they're just hungry, and in this neck of the woods we have people who come feed colonies of feral cats every day, as well as trap them and get them spayed or neutered.

When I first saw this thread I thought it was going to be about mead-drinking Viking kitties getting their brew taken away from them. :)
 
There are local organizations that feed and trap/fix/return ferals. One of my wife's coworkers volunteers with one, so I put the onus on her to set up getting some traps. Meantime, I made cat spray. ;)

In general I don't mind their being around, we just wanted to redefine the territorial boundary to exclude the window to our cats.
 
Ah, I see you're from Oakland...they would have something like that, I'd think.

I completely understand wanting to set limits for the little darlings...I try that from time to time with my own cats, but with no luck. At the moment I've got one stretched out along the top of my iMac, which is an inch or so wide. He doesn't seem to realize he doesn't fit, which is why he keeps falling off.

Back to catching up on mead threads...
 
sticky tape with the sticky part facing up works for surfaces like that. you keep putting it there until they get the idea. Soon you see them look there first then all you need is to leave a piece up there.

I use adhesive backed paper and I put it on the counters to keep them from jumping up there. I cut it in pieces so they stick to them and it's funny watching them try getting it off.
 
I had a cat (That's him by the way at 5mo.) and used to make a cat repellent out of vodka, water, lemon juice and ouzo (the licorice stuff). 1/2 water and 1/2 everything else.
-Lemon juice = Cats hate the smell of citrus, also it cuts their scent.
-Vodka = breaks through the oils in their fur to get to the skin.
-Ouzo = I know HE didn't like the smell.
I used this mixture because it stunk to high heaven for him and smelled quite nice for me....:D

We've got lots of neighbors and they all have outdoor cats, no feral necessarily, but running around. I don't mind them, except I have two beagles. They go apesh1t on the cats. The cats are brave enough to come over the fence when they know the dogs are inside. I've even seen one of them sitting on a fence post looking down (with disdain) at my beagles screaming and snarling at them, just out of reach. The cats make my dogs bark, so the cats annoy me in that sense. The cats like our yard because we've got ivy all over it, they like hunting around in it. If there is a way to repel them without harming them, I'm all ears. Have any of you had any tried and true results with any of these concoctions? I would like to create a perimeter. Thanks in advance.
 
The stuff I mixed up was fairly foul but it did work. Redefined the boundaries for those cats after only 2 applications. The dogs might not like it though, not sure how much you want to make their yard smell like horrid.
