Here is another NewBee question for y'all. I know, I have a lot of them.:rolleyes:

Being new at mead making, my biggest fear is probably oxidation.

So my question is, how essential is prepping a carboy with CO2 when racking?
Does it make a marked difference in the final product?
I know absolutely nothing of the practice or equipment and if it is an essential practice, I definitely like to learn more about what exactly I would need.

It's not necessary, but if it makes you feel better then go for it. Personally, I wouldn't waste the money. Just minimize head-space while bulk aging and you'll be fine, IMHO.

It is entirely unnecessary.

Oxidation is much less of a concern with mead than it is with beer or wine. Just being careful with your racking and making sure to eliminate headspace during aging is plenty. I also favor the use of sulfites.
