I'm traveling to Costa Rica this Wednesday and happened to see that there was entry from Costa Rica on the Mazer Cup facebook page. I did a quick search on google and only one place popped up which was Costa Rica Meadery. Looked like a small production but a decent selection when I was looking through the pics... I saw a dry traditional, Habiscus, Coffee Blossom, and Passion Fruit. I also saw they were in the process of making a braggot.

Has anyone tried these? Are there any other meaderies?

Anyway, I'm doing a brewery tour the first day and I told my buddy we have to stop.

Thanks Riverat. I did send a msg... just waiting for a reply. I have a friend currently living there who is going to take me on a small beer tour in San Jose. But if Noe has better recommendations, we are willing to try.

I have to give a big thanks for Costa Rica Meadery for giving a nice added bonus to my vacation. Actually, it was my first destination upon arrival. My friend had called the night before to arrange a midafternoon tour which I didn't think was going take long... at first. We met the owners Mike and Alejandra at their house which we would come find out they had remodeled a portion of their own home to make a promising future. This cozy ambiance and their warm hospitality provided a wonderful afternoon which continued well into the evening... didn't realize the amount of time passing in between sips. Here's a pic of all three of us (I'm in the middle).

Mike and Alejandra thoroughly explained their craftsmanship and we sampled multiple styles. One of these styles was a passion fruit melomel that provided a sweet, fruity beginning followed by smooth, nutty after taste. Like I had been eating sunflower seeds. Alejandra later told me, her secret was that she roasts the passion fruit seeds. I ended up buying 5 bottles... enough said.

Another one of my favorites was still in experimental phase and will most likely be a crowning achievement. Mike and Ally are working on what they call a signature Costa Rican mead in a sparkling braggot style. Alejandra germinates and grows a breed of purple corn only found within the country. This wonderful rich taste blended with carbonation was very pleasing to the palate. I had multiple glasses and my face was as numb as my ass by the end of the tour. Here's a pic of the corn and final product.

Just when I thought the night was ending and the tour would soon be done, Mike offered for us to tag along to check some of his hives later that week. Obviously we obliged. I never had the opportunity to see a hive and to see Africanized bees would be something of a rarity since I live in MN. The hive we looked at was located on a coffee plantation on the quiet mountain side of Alajauela. As soon as we got within 5 ft of the hive, they started dive bombing on our suits. According to Mike they were pretty tame that day... I beg to differ. Luckily everyone went unscathed and I got see some of Mike's beekeeping techniques.

If anyone happens to be in Costa Rica, I suggest paying Mike and Alejandra a visit.

Again if anyone has the chance to visit Costa Rica, please check out Costa Rica Meadery. Passiflora, the one I talked about below, took 2nd at this year's Mazer. I'm hoping my friend... aka my liquor mule... will bring back a few bottles this next week. Thanks again Mike and Ally for a wonderful experience.

Thanks, Paul!

If your buddy makes it to our place, we can definitely set you up with some Passiflora. I'd also like to send you our newest product... ChiCheMel Caribeno... A ginger braggot. It was very well received at last month's beer festival.

Ciao,
Michael

Another 2015 thread. We don't do this kind of thing on a forum.
