Feeling that my second batch of port should be entered but don't know what category it should fall under. There is so much going on with this port recipe. Should I placed it under the Pyment because the grape concentrate?... It's fortified and it has an abundant list of other ingredients so then should it be listed in the other category? Maybe I should ask, since it is my first entry ever, what category would be the best for a newbee?

Plus how do I send it in the mail? Do I need to fed ex? I thought you couldn't send booze in the mail.

26C, "Open Category Mead"
Any specialty or experimental mead using additional sources of fermentables (e.g., maple syrup, molasses, brown sugar, or agave nectar), additional ingredients (e.g., vegetables, liquors, smoke, etc.), alternative processes (e.g., icing, oak-aging) or other unusual ingredient, process, or technique would also be appropriate in this category.

Since you have additional ingredients (brandy) then according to the rules, you should be in 26C.

BTW, read your recipe, sounds amazing. Hope you do well!

I have never sent mead, but I have read a few threads about it, including a current one started by mannye. Generally, while sending mead may not be legal, there are no rules against sending a honey marinade. I believe that folks typically use UPS or FedEx and not the USPS.

Any problems with bottle shock... or is that just a wine thing?

Yes, bottle shock can make a mead taste flat and lifeless. Like all the mojo got up and left. After a few weeks it all comes back. It can last up to 8 weeks. I would bottle accordingly.

Anyone know what to put in the "special nature" section on the entry form? It's right under honey varietal... doesn't explain anything in detail on the website.

I assume you're asking about the home competition, not the commercial side. Since we run the home competition in accordance with BJCP standards, there isn't a "show mead" category per-se. You'd enter in one of the traditional subcategories. But if you indicate that your mead is a show mead (i.e. nothing but honey, water, yeast), the judges will take that into account.

Just curious if the commercial entries were full? Also, did you receive the Costa Rica meadery entries? Mike(owner) was telling me that there was a big customs dispute and i hope his entries still made it in.

I believe that we have maxed out on the commercial side, too, although I don't keep track of that part of the competition directly. I won't know which entries actually made it to our receiving site until I pick all the commercial entries next week. With all the legal and tax hassles in this country, and with different rules about the transport and storage of commercial alcohol in effect in every state, we utilize a licensed commercial beverage distributor to help us navigate through that mine field. All commercial entries are shipped to Elite Brands of Colorado and are only released to us two days before the event. Additionally, those entries coming from other countries need to be processed by a licensed importer. Stawski distributing in Chicago is our designated ship-to point for international commercial entries. Stawski will transfer the international meads to Elite in time for us to pick everything up by next Wednesday.

That's a long winded way of saying that none of us have any firsthand knowledge of any customs issues on the commercial side, or whether any issues have been resolved along the way.

Yes you can go to it as spectator. Plus they have commercial booths from what I can see on the Facebook page. Its held in Colorado though. U can check out the mazer cup website or FB page for more details
