New to mead. What tools do I need.

Hello, I just recently went to a wine tasting and the lady there pulled out something I didn't even know existed any more, MEAD!!! It blew my mind!!! It was sooooo delicious, well after doing a tiny bit and I mean a tiny bit off research I have decided i want to make it.

I have been all over the net looking at kits and reading forums. What do I need to get started. Seeing that I have no idea what I'm doing or what I'm getting into, I don't want to spend 300 dollars on a good 5 gallon kit to get a bunch of stuff I don't need.

That's why I am here. Please, I beg of you. Teach me, lead me and show me the ways. I am your padawan.

First thing first, what tools and equipment do I need to do this right? I don't want to get half way in and be caught with my pants down. I look foward to hearing from you all.

Read....A LOT. Do a JOAM first, then a traditional BOMM, both are "quick" Meads as compared to the traditional year long ones. All the time read and all the pieces will fall into place. Ken Schramm's book is also an excellent resource "The Complete Meadmaker". Info is great in the book - use it along with some of the new techniques and you will be making liquid gold in no time.

This forum has all the answers, not always easy to find them but if you have a question you can bet it was asked a few times before you joint up.

If I had to pick three tools I use every time other than hygrometer, thermometer, airlock and carboy, etc, it would be my big funnel, the long stir spoon and the big stainless steel pot with the ball valve built in it. (And a mop).
Check your local want ad's and Craigslist. You can pick up some good used stuff cheap. One of my co- workers and I found a guy selling his house and was selling all his wine equipment cheap. Ended up giving a lot of it to us free just to clear it out.

+1 on the JAOM. no special equipment needed. Everything you need is at the local grocery store. Very tasty. Sweet but balanced by spices. Once you have a couple of JAOM under your belt you'll be ready for BOMM. While you wait for that first batch of JAOM to ferment start looking in Craigslist for the aforementioned beer and wine equipment. It's in there all the time at pennies on the dollar vs new. I get all my carboys off CL. usually for 15 bucks. Even at twice that it's a score and I have never paid more than 25 for one.
