Hey, new to mead making and got a kit and all and am excited to try it. Done a bunch of reading and I see a lot of info on needed nutrients and acids etc. Every recipe seems to call for different ones. Is there a sort of generic one that can cover a bunch of simpler recipes. For example, I read that just yeast nutrient and yeast energizer added in small amounts the first three days is all you really need. Is this true or should I focus on getting the exact nutrients that each recipe calls for for? If so is there or brand or mix of yeast nutrients and energizer you recommend? Thanks for any clarification on this.

If you are using dehydrated powdered yeast, you can follow the directions on the back as is or you can choose to add nutrients to help the yeast get going. Nutrients are usually the way to go though too much might influence your end flavor, though not likely as the yeast itself will have more of a flavor impact.

A typical nutrient is Go-Ferm for starting the yeast before it goes into your must.

As far as other nutrients go, they generally fall into the organic or non organic category. DAP and Fermaid-K are your typical non organic while Fermaid-O is your organic variety.

Do you follow the recipe or not? Up to you. If you want a generic strategy, try the protocol found here:

I generally use the TOSNA calculator at that link and find that it works very well.
