Just tasted the "finished" product. It's really really good! Crisp dry and refreshing. It was very difficult to put back in the fridge.

One annoying thing was the lees are very loose and come off the bottom by just staring at the jug too hard. I suspect this was because I used the cloudy cider rather than the clear. I will try the clear next time and see if it works as well.

Theoretically... because I would never really do that.... would putting it in a bowl be advisable?
 
My lawyer can find nothing illegal in the TBA law concerning freeze fractionation. When I do it, I use 2 liter coke bottles. Freeze overnight, then thaw the first third of the liquid for the strongest fraction. Takes ~1-2 hours. Just turn the whole bottle upside down in a secondary container. What is left tastes like ice to me, but I'm sure some use can be found.

It is illegal. From the TTB:

Even though you are using and recovering purchased alcohol, you are separating the alcohol from a mixture -distilling.


"Separating the alcohol from a mixture" is the key phrase there.
 
Dis tilling is defined as using heat. It won't hold up in court.

haha... probably not, but by that time, you're gonna NEED all that booze to take away the pain of having spent all that money on lawyers! OH NO! I forgot a gallon of cider in the freezer! I wanted it to get real cold! Dammit. It's gonna be all frozen by the time I get to it tomorrow. I hope it's not ruined. :p

Ha. Yes it would. My wife is my accountant. Lol. I've seen this "is it legal?" Yes it is, no it's not argument on a dozen boards. Ha. I mean forums (showing my age...and how long this argument has been going on). It's not very productive and it seems, relevant.

The Feds aren't going to waste a second even if it is illegal because we aren't going to sell it it make enough even if we wanted to.

Bottom line, it's awesome!
