My brother and I stopped by the LHBS about three weeks ago and picked up a kit for 3 gallons of Pprt. We finally got around to starting it early this week.
I took the initial SG readings as per the directions and was surprised to find that the OG of the must was only 1.026. I double checked it with another hydrometer and came up with the same readings. I called the LHBS owner and he opened another kit to double check the OG. Not sure what happened to our kit, but he is giving us a replacement.
Now what to do with the original must. The must smells wonderful, it's just WAY too short on fermentable sugars... oh hey wait...an idea was sparked...
Tonight we will add about 10 pounds of honey to the must and repitch with KIV-1116. I am expecting that this Porto-pyment will turn out quite spectacular. I'll post it in the brewlog as we get it rolling.
