I searched around the forums for the quantity of honey one should add to beer to prime it for bottling. Folks talk about doing it, but what quantity do you add for a standard 5 gallon batch of beer?

Many thanks!!

I always used the same 3/4 cup measure whether it was honey or corn sugar. They're both about equally fermentable.

Sugar sits about 100% fermentables, whereas honey sits at about 80% so I'd say about a cup for the honey and 3/4 for the sugar is about right. Depends on the honey you use.

Thanks guys.

I am going to give a shot at brewing some beers, but would prefer to use honey for priming.

Thanks again!!

have any of you tried priming with bown sugar? maybe it would add some good flavor? this weekend im starting 2 batches of beer and i was just kind of thinking about it.....

Brown sugar? That's a nice idea. Give you a little molassesy Bass Ale flavor. Cool.

So far I have only used the priming sugar which came with a couple kits, honey (1 cup honey in 1 cup water boil for about 5 minutes) and DME (4oz in 2 cups water and boil for 15 minutes). I guess anything which is fermentable could be used, but watch out for bottle bombs. You could add brown sugar in the kettle as a fermentable, maybe a Belgian Trippel or Double with brown sugar. That might be interesting...
