proper hydrometer readings?

ok so i have read there are pro's and cons to stirring up all your honey versus letting it sit at the bottom...my question is if the honey is all at the bottom will you get a proper reading off of the hydrometer? or does it all need to be mixed to get an accurate OG reading?

if i stir it up for the reading, will the honey settle back down to the bottom?
 
The honey needs to be stirred up,
so that the specific gravity (density) includes all the honey to get the correct readings.

So not stirring relies on trusting other methods of roughly determining what the OG should be.
 
There is a thread that McFeely posted concerning determining SG readings based on weight. It might be worth trying if you are going for the honey on bottom approach.

I belive the thread is called "new method for monitoring specific gravity"
