specific gravity terminology, help please

I am reading past posts before making my first mead. I was looking at JAOM and an apple mead thread. I ran into a problem understanding the relationship between posts that say 1.16 and replies that say 1120 would be better than 1.16. Does 1120 mean 1.12? Are they both talking about the specific gravity scale? Water is 1.000 and is that also referred to as 1000? I am guessing yes, but I would prefer to get it correct from more experienced members.

1120 is the same thing as 1.120. People as just leaving our the decimal point. 1.000 and 1000 are the same also.

1.160 is a very high starting specific gravity for a mead. That is why someone said 1.120 would be much better. 1.120 is generally considered the safe maximum starting gravity (original gravity or OG) for most meads.
