White Winter Winery - Raspberry Mead 11.5 ABV No vintage on bottle.
A gift from my brother, cellared for our anniversary about 6 months.

I can't compete with Oskaar's trained palet or eloquent descriptions, but here goes.

Appearance:

Deep ruby red. Color is consistant from center to the edges of the glass. The mead is gem-like and brilliantly clear. There is no hase visible at all.


Aroma and Flavor:

I'm drinking it chilled - nearly 40 degrees Farenheit. There is very little aroma at this temperature. As it warms, there is the aroma of fresh raspberries.

There is a burst of fresh ripe raspberries at the first sip. It reminds me of my mom's fresh raspberry pies from childhood. Quite sweet at the start with a very pleasant astringincy at the finish - again reminding me of raspberry seeds.

Observations:

The honey character is quite muted. If I were blind taste testing I'd swear I was drinking a sweet raspberry wine. An excellent desert wine well balanced with the alcohol, sweetness and astringent followup. Contains Sulfites, but I do not notice them at taste threshold as in some other wines and meads.

I'll be searching for more of this!
 
Great stuff,

Making notes to yourself and tasting and tasting and tasting, and then tasting some more is the best way to find those hidden aromas and flavors.

This is my first commercial mead, from White Winter Winery, here in my home state of Wisconsin. I purchased it online from the winery, $10.90 Sampled at 57 degrees.

Appearance: Brilliantly clear, beautiful ruby red. (I wish I could get my meads that beautiful!)

Aroma: Bright raspberry aroma. Some very subtle honey notes under the dominating raspberry.

Flavor: Sweet up front, with nice raspberry flavor (less flavor than aroma). Some astringency starts in the middle of the siip and continues to the finish, honey flavor becomes more apparent in the finish than up front. Alcohol is not immediately noticable. Raspberry flavor lingers long after the glass is empty.

Overall: I cannot judge this in the "overall". This is my first commercial melomel (and my first ever raspberry mel), and so have no reference for comparison. That being said, this is a very nice drink. Sweet, more raspberry than honey. As David Baldwin put it, this tastes more like a raspberry wine, than a melomel.

(Please note: this is not a criticsm....merely a comment. Notice how many times I wrote "raspberry" in this review. If you don't really care for raspberries, this melomel is NOT for you. This mel is ALL about the raspberries.)

I am impressed with this first commercial experience. I will buy this again. My next sample will be their Cyser. I make Cysers, and am excited to compare what I make to what is sold. I will post my results.
