It's been a few years since I've been to a Mazer Cup, but even if there aren't any public events, I'm sure there will be the after hours parties. These are a lot of fun, a lot of sharing and tasting and story swapping.

Communities like that create critical mass and momentum for things like mead making. Just the database of mead lovers would be a hugely valuable tool to the hobby.

Thank you for your insight and sage advice both on this thread and elsewhere, which I have always found educational and useful. Your comments are exactly what I am thinking the Association will become.

I am making plans to attend the MCI, however I am in the National Guard and that is drill weekend so I may not be able to make it. I was disappointed to learn there will be no public forum this year, however as you pointed out I expected there to be many after hours gatherings. In fact Hunters Moon Meadery has offered their suite as a gathering place for anyone who wants to get together and talk about the AMMA. Hope they don't mind me throwing that out there.

I was disappointed to learn that there will not be a public dinner this year. I've never been to the MC so I guess I just don't know what to expect, but I had thought that the public dinner is where all the raising of cups and rubbing of elbows goes on...Is the event itself open to the public? I am planning to come this year if there is room for me as a volunteer...

It has been mentioned in other threads, but to specifically address your concerns, I assure you that there will be plenty of opportunities to raise a few cups and learn a lot from all the other fine folks attending the event. We cannot be 'open to the public' (we are precluded only from hosting the public tastings) this year, but everyone who volunteers will have access to both the commercial and home competitions, and as well the awards ceremony on Saturday night. I don't think that all the volunteer assignments have been made yet, so you should still be able to access the volunteer page and get yourself into the mix. BTW - if early registrations are any indication, the home meadmakers competition this year will be even larger than the last time. Entries are running about 20% more than the same time in the registration cycle as last year. Just thought you all would like to know. ;D
 
New to the forums, though not to mead...

It occurs to me that the federal lobbying goals are noble and would be welcome by all, but they're quite lofty. When outlining goals I find it helpful to have a range of goals, both in terms of timeline and level of effort.

For instance one goal that I think would be much more attainable and likely to be widely hailed, would be the establishment of independent mead style guidelines. Nothing against the work of the BJCP but having the mead style guidelines written by a group centered far more on beer is a bit of a chink in the armor of mead standing on its own. Establishing an independent mead judging certification program would seem to be welcome as well based on some of the conversations I heard at the Mazer Cup.
 
It is my great honor and privilege to announce that effective May 1st, 2012 the American Mead Makers Association was formally incorporated under the laws of the State of Washington. This is the first step in establishing an organization whose purpose is to support and promote the mead industry. For incorporation purposes it was necessary to select three individuals responsible for the organization. Chris & Cheryl Webber, Dragon’s Lair Country Wines & Meads of Lakewood, Washington were named President pro tem and Secretary respectively and Woody Drake of Brothers Drake Meads in Columbus, Ohio is Vice President.

The next step is to formally select a Board of Directors and establish committees as defined in the Association Bylaws, which can be found online at the Associations website http://knightbachelor.net/meadmakersassn.htm. And of course no organization can function without resources. We encourage each and every one of you to submit your dues. This will help in getting the office established and with putting together a newsletter.

We look forward to working with all of you as we embark on this new adventure. Watch for regular updates on our progress and feel free to contact us should you have ideas and especially if you want to volunteer.

This is the email that was sent out to the industry a few days ago.

It is my great honor and privilege to announce the First Annual American Mead Makers Association Business Meeting to be held in conjunction with the Mazer Cup International Mead Competition. We will meet on the afternoon of Thursday, March 14th at 2:00PM in the Mt. Sanitas room of the Boulder Outlook Hotel. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

During this meeting we will be electing our first official Board of Directors. We only have a few hours to conduct all of our business so we are asking that if you are interested in serving as an officer or have someone in mind to nominate please reply to this email quickly. Hopefully we can identify a slate of candidates before March 14th. As founder and President, pro temp, I am offering to continue in the capacity as President. I think this will help in continuing the momentum we have at least for the next year or so. Also, my wife, Cheryl, Co-Founder and Secretary-Treasurer is willing to continue as Treasurer at least one term to prevent any turbulence a change of Treasurer will cause.

We will also be appointing Committees. Most of the Chairmanship positions are predetermined according to the Bylaws, but there are a few open if anyone is interested. Again, let us know so it can be made part of the record at the meeting. All the responsibilities of officers and committees are laid out in the Bylaws, which are online at our website. http://www.meadmakers.org/index.htm You will also find a link to a PDF of our meeting agenda on the Annual Meeting page.

We need to adopt the Bylaws. I encourage everyone to take some time to read through and see if there are any places we can make improvements. Remember, nothing is formal or official until the Bylaws are adopted so we have some flexibility to adjust them.

The second half of the meeting will be for Member Comments. Some discussion ideas will include establishing expanded style guidelines for competitions and regulations and establishing a Mead Maker of the Year program. Send us your suggestions for other topics and we will work in as many as we can. Of course I will be at the MCI all weekend to facilitate other discussions.

Finally, we have posted a short questionnaire on Survey Monkey to start gathering basic data on the industry. Please take a few minutes to fill it out. We will be including some of the raw data in our March Newsletter. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/QQD57X2 Speaking of the Newsletter we need articles and advertisers. I encourage everyone to write something up and send it in. This issue is all about competitions so let us know about any mead competitions in your area. We also need Bio’s on mead makers.
