how long can bentonite set in a carboy on mead ? does it run its course and then its done? or does it rune the Mead if set to long ?

Bentonite is a fining agent (clarifying agent?) that kinda acts like a microscopic material magnet. you could add it in at any time and stir and let settle; it should take the floating/suspended stuff(yeast, other particles) down to the bottom with it. you would then rack off of it. bentonite doens't really have a course to run. for lack of a better term, it "attracts" solid particulates out of the fluid. the longer it's in the must/mead, the more that settles to the bottom.

with that said, I've read around here, that the earlier you add it into the must, the better the effectiveness. I've also read that late usage, i.e. put it in today and take it out tomorrow has some finding 'off' flavors.

but anyway, I'm just a lurking newbee with only about 30gallons of mead making under my belt ... so take my advice with some % error.

It works nicely when added dry up front. What Trenchie said about it addedwet post ferment is true. You can add it for a while but too long and it will start to taste like mud
