My wife and I spent part of yesterday and today picking blueberries in the forest (Tongass National Forest) around town. Ended up with only 8 lbs 14 oz yesterday, and 16 lbs 11 oz today, for a total of about 25.5 pounds. Ran into a huge brown bear when we were picking yesterday, but is took the smart option and headed up a hill after it saw us.

We are going again tomorrow night as I want another 5 or so pounds so I will have enough berries for a batch of mead and one of wine. Not as many berries this year, but the bears always make it fun. May pick some huckleberries to add to the blueberries - as they taste about the same anyway.

Picked through, cleaned, bagged, and placed the berries in the freezer. Now, I just need to figure out how I am going to make them into something drinkable.

Now why does this make me think of the children's book Blueberries for Sal?

:)

Oh, to be able to pick blueberries locally! When I was a kid I'd never had a blueberry, so when I read this book I always imagined the taste of blackberries on my tongue.

Followed your link and found this description, which reminded me of taking my daughter blueberry picking when she was young: "try as she might--just can't seem to pick as fast as she eats." She is now attending university in Flagstaff, AZ, so no berries for her this year, though she is looking forward to coming home in 2010 to steal some of my wine and mead :).

Don't know what formulation I will work with to do the mead, but unfortunately I will be using Costco Clover Honey :(.

Don't fret. There's nothing wrong with Costco's clover, especially in a fruit bomb batch. I use it where I know that the honey is going to be overpowered and hidden by the fruit, and it works just fine. I find it to be a very useful honey.

Good Mazing!
