I find that homebrew lasts longer than commercial, but it all depends on your definition of "keep". Commercial beer is packaged to be consistent, and will have an "expiration" of about when the intended flavor profile doesn't hold anymore. Homebrew will change over time as well, but since it has less of a need to taste one and only one way, it "keeps" longer. I also feel like having yeast in the bottle keeps things from going south longer, but it might all be in my head. I've drank 4% abv beer that I made after a year in the bottle. It tasted fine.

How long a shelf life does home beer have?

No need to worry about a "shelf life". Once your friends discover you are brewing, it won't last. Making good beer is easy, making exceptional beer is a matter of tweaking a recipe.
 
My buddy and I just made our first beer, bottled around July 11th. For our first time we used a brew kit for a cream ale billed as a Lawnmower Beer, good for hot summer days.

Well when we finally bottled and tasted it we found we loved it!;D And so far so has everyone who has tried it. I am already making plans to make another batch as soon as my carboy is freed up.

One thing I did different, I started the yeasties in GoFerm and added some nutrients to the must. The kit didn't call for it but I figured if it is good for mead then it is good for beer. My beer took off like a shot the first couple days and then pretty much died. I think the yeast liked my additions as I calculated the ABV at around 9%.:eek:
