I am an avid hunter so I will speak in these terms to begin with. Biologist can determine how many mouths a certain are can support. When the determine how many elk tags will be dispersed in a game management unit (GMU) they look at how large the heard is and compare that to the caring capacity of the land. They then can determine how many tags get dispersed in that particular GMU. They also try to maintain a male/female ratio but that's besides the point.
So, if a 5 gallon pail of must, holding x amount of food becomes inoculated with a yeast pitch, will the yeast only split/double to a certain point based on the "caring capacity" of the 5 gallon pail? Or do they just mindlessly continue to procreate with no space, or food considerations?
If I pitched 5 g of yeast or 20g's of yeast would I end up with the same amount of yeast per ml at the end of the ferment?
Over crowded animals will eventually turn on each other and kill off competitors. Some even cannibalize. How do yeast colonies compare?
