Augusta, GA
Hey everyone,
Does anyone know where I can pick some corny kegs locally in GA? Preferably in the Augusta area? Thanks in advance.

Shawn

Craigslist can sometimes produce some good deals on kegs. If there is a local brew club you could ask there too.

One thing some folks get angry about though is people selling kegs they got from a distributor but never returned. These kegs are owned usually by the brewery, so by buying one you are basically stealing from a brewery (and paying some random guy to do it). That is bad. So, do try to make sure the keg you buy is legitimate first.

Akueck, I totally agree about buy legit kegs, but at the hotel I work at I had an interesting conversation with the beer delivery guy. I asked if he knew where I could purchase some used corney kegs. He had no idea but he said, let me call the plant manager, maybe he will know. So he calls the plant manager and I am listening to the conversation over the Nextel. The plant manager says he is not sure because they do not use them at their facility. And he does not know where they can even buy any for me.. After a couple minutes of discussion the PLANT MANAGER suggested I just go to the store buy the keg of beer, pay the small deposit fee and just not return it.

My local LHBS store has them for $45 each used. I think I will pay the $45 ea. remain legit and help my local LHBS.

Morale of the story, Support your local business if possible, when you have a question or problem, it's alot easier to get help from someone you are supporting. At least buy legally

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was hoping to help support my local brew shop, but Augusta doesn't have one! :( I've already tried calling all the local breweries and soda distributors, but no one seems to use them much anymore, at least not in a commercial sense. The closest brew shops are Atlanta which is 2+ hours away. Oh well, back to ordering everything online.

Thanks again everyone.

I got a craigslist score last night. For $130, I got:

5 - 5 gallon cornies
2 - 3 gallon cornies
3 - 5 gallon glass carboys
And a bucket filled with misc. airlocks, stopprs, hydrometer, capper, etc.

Oh, and the bank approved my offer on a house to store all this in. Doing the home inspection today!

Congratulations on your great deal BBBF! WOW, you got a really good buy there. Especially those 3 gallon cornies. Hope your new house deal comes through for you so you can give those carboys and cornies a nice new place to live. Happy Mead Day! All the best.

Bryon,

According to the link it is (4) for 94.99 not (5), and with shipping it brings the total to 143.37.

If you buy 12 or more it looks like the price drops to around 30.00 each.

It does look like a good site though.

Well, I got me a corny keg and have my kegerator setup, but one more question. What does everyone set their PSI at to carbonate your beer/soda/whatever? Also, does it typically take a day or two to get fully carbonated?

-Shawn

Here's a link to an online carbonation calculator, it works well for both bottling and kegging. It's important to note, that different beer styles have different CO2 volumes.

When I first started kegging I would place my keg in the kegerator, crank the CO2 to 25 or 30 psi, and then shake the keg everytime I walked by. As soon as the beer was cold enough I'd drop the pressure to 5-8 psi for dispensing...the problem was the levels were never consistant.

Now I prime all my beer in the keg and let it sit for at least two weeks before placing it in the kegerator.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of your help again with the whole carbonation thing! I finally got my newest batch of soda to carbonate with the help of the CO2 in my kegerator. I know most people on here are brewing beer, that's coming soon I promise, but my wife really like fresh soda on tap.

I'm going to try my hand at beer as soon as I finish up my current batch of wine. I thought about trying a kit for my first batch of beer, since I really don't know what I'm doing and after reading the book I thought a kit might seem better. Any thoughts?

Also, for those who are curious to know, I brewed a batch of Autumn Red Birch Beer this past time for my soda endeavor. It turned out great! Nice subtle birch beer taste with a beautiful red color to it.

Thanks again,
Shawn
