Thanks, NeadMead. It's our hourly hope that things will calm down here. The reason that my Dad ironically suggested a shotgun is because I would be a great liabilty to my household if I tried to handle any other weapon. But shotguns are illegal here anyway, so it's all academic.

Well, Mirriam, if you have the money you could possiby hire rob Leatham. Better yet Massad Ayoob. Yes he is Arab and no he is not like most Arabs in the Middle East. He, from what I heard, is an excellent teacher in defense with a pistol. He is also a top cop here in the States, and has his own defensive pistol courses that are recognized by most states with shall issue here. If not, find an Israeli soldier or police officer who is willing to teach you.
Me, I've got a Taurus revolver under the bed in the single-gun safe. I've also got a lead-loaded titanium baseball bat down there. If I can't get the gun out, I figure I can take someones head off with the bat....
I'm an ok shot with a pistol, around a 4-in group at 5 yds, but can hit a 3-inch target (clays and tiles in the N-SSA) 60% of the time at 50 yds and 40% of the time at 100 yds with my black powder musket and carbine. I can get off 2 shots a minute with the musket (muzzle loading) and 3-4 with the carbine (breech load).(Don't ask me about the black-powder pistol....LOL)
Vicky - missing N-SSA shoots now that we're in summer break season

I'm inordinately fond of my Taurus Model 50 revolver. It fits my hand, and shoots either .38 or .357 rounds. I prefer the .38, the .357 kicks like crazy! (although the foot-long flames that come out are pretty cool...)

OK, since we're showing off our toys...
Yes, it is a WW II vintage Nazi-occupied FN produced Browning High Power 9mm, brought back from Germany by my dad after the war. Note the Waffenampt proof marks (barely visible Nazi eagle clutching a swastika) stamped into the metal in several places, along with the plexiglass grips that were sold by some enterprising young German entrepreneurs, which they carved out of German aircraft windscreen blanks shortly after the war ended. The serial numbers on this one (which all match) indicate it was produced early after the occupation of the FN facility, probably early in 1942. This sucker is not light, and the single action trigger is a bear to pull relative to more modern sidearms, but the beast is a consistent shooter and will certainly serve to deter anyone foolish enough to even think about stealing my mead!
Oh, one more thing... having this gun, as shown, is illegal in the state of California as it has its original 13 round clip.
