Good evening, all! My wife and I decided to make the "baby's first mead" found here:

Of course, being the hardheaded people we are, we modified it slightly. My wife isn't a fan of orange flavor, and I could live on oranges. So, she halved what the recipe called for, and I doubled it. Here's a picture after 24 hours, I hope everything is going well with it. My balloon won't deflate, even with three pinholes! I assume that's because of the extra orange.

I've been lurking around for a couple weeks, so I figured I would say hello!

As you probably already discovered, Mead needs nutrients for the yeast to grow. This being said, the oranges do provide some of those nutrients for the yeast. Alternatives would to be adding pears instead or more raisins would also help if you're wanting something more natural. Otherwise another option would be stopping at your local hobby shop and picking up some yeast energizer and nutrient.
