I live here in Florida.....Unfortunately I will most likely be moving out of the state before this next summer when these fruits are available......This is really a bummer because I have lived here for 20 years, and I suddenly decide to start brewing mead 2 months before I move......
Anyway, there are many native fruits that grow naturally all over the place in South Florida.....Too bad Ill be gone before I will be able to experiment with them in mead making.......
If YOU live in Florida....Mabe you could follow my dream in making meads from these native fruits......
FLORIDA CHERRIES....Small red fruit with one big seed in the middle of each fruit....Tastes like a citrus fruit. Grows everywhere....Look for bushes of these along sidewalks in the summer, used as a hedge type bush.
MUSCADINE GRAPE....Tiny gold to purple grapes, sour and sweet. Grows everywhere around here.
STRAWBERRY GUAVA......This fruit I really think would make a killer mead.....Its actually an invasive plant here in S. Florida but it grows everywhere on the property that I live....Fruit looks like a crab apple, Guava like and gooey on the inside....Very sweet, strawberry like in flavor. By the way, it only grows in Florida, and Hawaii in the USA.
STAR FRUIT.....Not exactly everywhere around here, but probably more grown here in Florida than any other state. The yellow / green fruit is star shaped.
COCONUT......Been thinking of a mead made with coconuts, probably hard to get the fat and oils out first though.
SAWPALMETTO......These palms also grow everywhere around here.....Good for your prostate, might also be good for a mead, or mead additive.
CITRUS FRUIT.......Florida has all kinds of citrus fruit.....This is the most obvious choice to make meads with around these parts. Key limes might make for an interesting mead.
MANGOS.....The beautiful Mango fruit is very plentiful around Florida and into the keys.
BANANNAS......Lots of Banannas around S. Florida.....even a few seemingly wild growing ones on sides of roads, etc.
ORANGE BLOSSUM HONEY.......Most of the honey in Florida is Orange Blossum Honey....Why? Because Oranges come from Florida!
There are others Im sure, but these are the first that come to mind!
......And so I pass this wise wisdom on to you, fellow Floridian, maker of mead.............If you happen to live in Florida, experiment with these fruits.....Put up a post here on how they turned out.....I be interested in knowing that, since I wont be able to try these out myself.
