Fowler's Food and Wine in Durham, NC has now started carrying Redstone's mead and nectars as well as Desi Dew's meads.

GntlKnght,

Think you could pick some up and post a review or two? I'm interested in commercial meads, and I've never had any from either of those two meaderies.

I had a bottle of Redstone's Traditional Mountain Honey Wine a few weeks ago. I was drinking this bottle, so I may not remember all of it's characteristics! LOL

My first inpression was "Wow!" It has a wonderfully strong honey flavor, which does not overpower. I was unable to pinpoint a specific honey, tho afterwards I found out they use a blend of honeys. This was a sweet mead, which is what I prefer. I have tasted meads before with a strong honey flavor, but they generally have a distinctive aftertaste that I have never been able to put into words. This one had the wonderful flavor of honey, but not that aftertaste. Just as a side note, they use the fliptop bottles; this was a 1 liter cobalt blue bottle, which I plan on refilling! Wonderful bottle!!! LOL One of the most amazing things about this mead (which you may laugh about) is that after you empty the glass, then smell the glass, it smells like you just opened a container of honey! Look for Redstone! It is worth it! By the way, Redstone is one of the meaderies that spearheaded the formation of the International Mead Association!

Desi Dew is a North Carolina Meadery. I had some of thier mead at the Renaissance Faire here last year. I know I have a bottle, which now I have an excuse to open! I know I liked it enough to go out and buy a bottle, but I don't really recall much else about it! May have been distracted by cleavage! What can I say!?!

GntlKnght,

Once you do open it, please write up a review, and post it to the Commercial Mead Reviews section. And don't forget to have some for me -- I've never even heard of Desi Dew, let alone seen it in my local store!

Not sure if a review has been posted yet, but I love to revive old threads~

The Whole Foods in most of the Durham area carry Desi Dew meads....this was my first commercial mead, and the one that got me hooked on my new habit/hobby/obsession!

just got word from Bill at Desi Dew that he won't be able to attend MeadFest in Boulder next month :(

they do mail order to reciprocal states and currently have a very limited amount of Tupelo Jubilee, made exclusively from local Tupelo honey. I have mine coming mail order and will post a review asap!

So are we talking just sweet meads here, or do they do a good dry metheglin as well?

I've been meaning to try some commercial meads, but I'm not a big fan of sweet alcoholic drinks, so Chaucer's is right out.

No dry meth, but they do make a straight dry still mead that may be to your liking.

The blackberry mead is actually a semi-sweet fortified with blackberry wine.

I've still not opened my bottle of Tupleo Jubilee, so I can't speak about it.
