I'm messing around with hops I haven't used much before. This one smelled very fruity (fruit loops was one descriptor offered) at the end of the boil, we'll see how it turns out.

~ 3 gallons in the fermenter

6 lbs pale malt
2 lbs white wheat malt
1/2 lb German Vienna malt

3 gallons mash water, 3 gallons sparge water
Collected ~4 gallons

60 min boil
3/4 oz Falconer's Flight (blend) 30 min
1 oz Centennial 15 min
1/2 oz Centennial + 1/2 oz Motueka 5 min

Pitched onto a cake of Wyeast 1056.

FG 1.009. Bottled, yield 29 x 12 oz + 1 x 22 oz. 2.75 oz corn sugar.

This one still smells a bit like fruit loops. Kind of odd, that. It's not bad though, and I think some carbonation will do it good.

The fruit loopiness is gone, and this turned out well. The hop flavor and aroma is a good level, but it could be a little more bitter. It's not malty per se, but still could use a touch more balance.

The hops are a bit of a mish-mash. It's sort of a non-distinct citrusy profile. Too many hops to really pick any of them out. I'd probably move the Falconer's Flight earlier in the boil to bring up the bitterness and tamp down the "all of the above" hop flavor effect, then add a little more Centennial near the end.

Hey there akueck,

This sounds like a nice warm weather IPA. JMO, but I would also add the first hop addition earlier, probably 14g@60min instead of 21g@30. Most of the things Ive read is that 40 to 20 mins into the boil is the dead zone where you dont get enough utilization to add the right bitterness and the boil is too long to add any significant flavor or aroma. If your also looking for a bit more malt balance you could raise you mash temp a few degrees next time or go with one lb wheat and add another 1/2lb vienna malt to your mash.

I intentionally added hops at a later, lower utilization time. I'd probably bump that addition up a bit, it could have used a touch more bitterness. But I think it was a very nice beer, I would probably make something similar again with more hops I haven't used before.
