Well I was surprised to see not one post relating to Australian brewing, so I thought I would add some information.

First thing is just some general prices, this is what I paid for my first supplies (prices in AUD)

1. 3 Gallon glass carboy $32.95
2. Bubbler lock $4.00
stopper for the carboy$2.75
3. racking tube, $4.00
4. hydrometer $13.25

and a generic wine yeast <white wine> for about $2.50. The hydrometer is a nice glass one, wine and beer specific, it doesn’t go beyond 1.150 for SG.

The carboy has the cover on it with handles for easy moving <like the ones you see in wineries>

And with a bit of research I found the 5L glass Demijohns for about 16.50 <online> that’s the equivalent <as far as I know> to the 1 gallon jugs, used by many for mead.

That aside a useful web resource is

http://www.countrybrewer.com.au/index.htm Just a website you can order things from based in NSW Australia. I like to use these kinds of pages to get an idea of prices, so when I ask my local home brew shop, I know a rough price.

http://www.liquorcraft.com.au/ they sell some things to, but they don’t have pictures which frustrates me a little.

Another thing you can do (which I did) is do a search on yellowpages.com.au for home brew. You end up with quite a large list of sites. The ones near the top tend to have web sites as well.

liquorcraft.com.au, from memory, seems to sell through brewcraft.com.au. They have quite a good list of equipment, but do appear to be abit lite on yeasts that are mentioned in most of the receipies.

I can't remember where I left it but a found a few sites that stock most of the yeasts that have them available by mail order. If I can find it again I'll post it here. You can also search using google and searching for yeast supplies folowed by the state you are in. Alternatively you can just limit the search to Australia. Some sites don't do interstate delivery.

[Edit] You can pick up PET bottles in Big W, in Victoria for about $10-12 there are 15, 740ml bottles and they come with caps, made by Coopers for home brewing.

You can get some cheap yeast at Big W as well <beer yeast, I think it’s larger> for $1 and Finings for the same price. You can get air locks and things cheap there as well, and if you have about $60 you can buy a 20+ liter fermenter for beer, they usually come with a capper, some caps, a hydrometer, and Malt Extract with Sugar. You can just get the Hydrometer for about $13 <mines glass, just called a wine and beer hydrometer> oh the beer kit comes with a bottling tool as well, and the valve at the bottom has a thing in it <just a bit of plastic with a hole> to reduce the yeast when you bottle. The bottling tool fills from the bottom of the bottle to reduce air. it makes allot however so you might be best if starting out to pick up a 1 gallon <5l> jug from a home brew store for about $15.

Big W have bottle cleaners, thermometers <they stick onto the sides of carboys> good for knowing the temperature of you brew.

That’s about all I can think of right now, other than if you can find a local bee keeper you should be able to get honey cheaper than the local supermarket <the supermarket is about $10+ for a kg a bee keeper about $8-9>

Was at Bi-Lo today and noticed that they have their own brand (Bi-Lo) honey in 1 kilogram (glass) jars for under $6 (AU). It's not a light coloured honey. Not as dark as Beechworth however. Didn't have much of a chance to look at it closely as we were trying to get some other stuff done as well. When I have a demijohn (5 litre)free I may give it a try (although there are a few other things that I want to try first).
