Wow….That’s huge! My Government <Australia> seems to be getting out the checkbook a lot of late and handing large amounts of money to countries that have had disasters. Im not sure what our national debt is, hopefully not that big because there’s only 20 something million of us.
 
A lot of the debt is securities owned by the American people as well as people in foreign countries. And the reason countries still trade with the US despite the high debt is because the US has never defaulted on a loan.
 
The Chinese are buying up a lot of it... nothing like a little added pressure on Washington to be favorable with the Chinese on contentious issues, or at least pretend they don't exist.
