Hey everyone,
I've been thinking about making a Honey Orange Amber or Wheat brew for Thanksgiving this year and I have a question about when to add the orange. Should I add the orange during boiling or when the wort goes into the primary? Also, would you use fresh oranges or sweet orange peel? Thanks in advance!

-Shawn

Add the honey after flameout when temp below 160F or so or in the primary and mix well. Orange peel (fresh or dried) can be added to the boil with 5 minutes left...

I agree with Poobah, although I'd let the wert come down to room temperature before I pitched my yeast.

Also, I'd go with orange, tangelo and grapefruit zest rather than the peel. I feel you get more of the actual volatile citrus aromas, really nice character in the flavor and a good blending of the malt and citrus.

Cheers,

Oskaar

Thanks for the thoughts guys! I will try... something and post the results here. I guess I will have to make a trip to the LHBS to see what they have. I don't want to do liquid additives this time (did that with a rasberry brew I just made), especially since I'm going to try and make the brew NA for my father-in-law who is recovering.

I think I might try the sweet orange peel first in the boil and then maybe add a fresh cut-up orange to the primary.

Ok so I think I have my beer recipe, let me know what you think.

3.3 lb of Sparkling Amber Malt
3.3 lb of Golden Light Malt
1.5 lb of honey (Sweet orange or similar)
2 oz of Cascade Hops
1 oz of sweet orange peel (boil)
Wheat beer yeast
5/8 cup of Honey for priming

That's it. I will kindly take suggestions.
