I notice not many ladies post here. Mr. Norskersword turned me on to the idea of mead and I did try some store bought, but didn't care much for it. Maybe that was because I drank it out of a wine glass :)
I think I got chauncers and it was a little too sweet for my tastes. What store bought brands do you experts reccommend? Norskersword has yet to send me his own brew - although he promised he would.
Oh yeah, is there any special drinking instruments for a real lady? What would the viking queen have used? Maybe a delicate, intricately carved, pure ivory horn with gold inlay? Can I find one like that? That's what I want!

This is really old but wanted to put this information out regarding this post. According to the Prose Eddas and other sources viking woman were actually the keepers of the drinking horns so to speak. More specifically the valkyries were the keepers of Odins mead. They would serve him the mead and were the keepers of it within his hall. This was not a subservient role, but seen as a great honor and distinction. For no one else could do this. The woman would drink from the same untinsils as any man.

Now this part I cannot verify and is third hand information from what I consider to be a reliable source. In norweigian culture woman were also the keepers of the house and the keys to the house. Which was sort of the deed of those times. The woman controlled the property through proxy of marriage.

I suspect mine's about that big too, usually I drink water out of it but when I put mead in it, I only put a little in. Wouldn't want to slosh it. Or myself.

I have a hand made, pitch lined leather goblet which I drink mead from. It's the only drinking vessel in the house I will drink mead from, but I'm thinking of getting a drinking horn as a backup xD

24oz?!
What ABV will you be drinking from it?!

Well I recieved the actual horn and its pretty narly looking. Its almost pure black and has this crazy half twist to it. I will take a picture when I can. However im not sure the inside is lined with anything. I emailed the seller to find out for sure. If its not no big deal I will soak it in no rinse cleanser or campden tablets and call it good.

Also I think the true capacity of my horn is about maybe 20oz or a little less. I will check tonight. I also tried to drink a bottle of some really young and way too sweet mead that I just couldnt stand to finish. But I realized I poured too much and dont try doing anything else while you are drinking from it. I think it would be much better used in a group setting.

Yeah I just found out the seller stated it has been lined with beeswax.

I have a "holster" for mine so I can wear it on my hip.

Yeah mine came with one too but unless im standing it does no good lol. Like I said I think thats why they are more social drinking devices then anything. Otherwise a nice glass will do.

I'd like to turn up some traditional 'session' mugs for drinking mead. Goblets there are aplenty ;-)
Can anybody show me a pic of a period mead mug that I can copy? All I can find is goblets and horns.

In answer to the OP I drink with a mate, and in large heavy walled quality wine glasses, almost V shaped, but no sharp angles.

I've got the holster thing too, it works pretty well if I sit in a chair with open sides (I can even leave about a cup of water in mine and sit in the car (bucket seats) without soaking myself), but yeah, they're not so great for sitting around because you can't really put them down until they're empty...

Yeah well im fat and clumsy so I couldnt use it sitting down lol. Also I noticed my horn is still dirty so im soaking it in no rinse cleaner and campden tablets. I will recoat it in bees-wax myself.

Mine's deep enough that I can't see/reach the bottom so I actually filled the bottom with wax just for easier cleaning.
