Wineglass for me. I do love the color and swirl of my own good drink; besides I agree with the others that to appreciate the aroma and taste, glass provides the best medium. In addition, I love glass (and collect glass bottles).

Now get your tomatoes and rotten eggs ready, because here comes another True Confession - drinking out of an animal's horn is too barbaric for me. Ouch!

I definatly drink my mead from a wine glass as well. I'm not a big drinker and only drink when I share with friends, so a wine glass is proper for showing off all aspects of my mead.
 
I drink my mead from whatever container I can find - glass, pewter, ceramic, horn, stainless steel, plastic, and even paper. I especially like drinking other people's mead. ::)

Having spent too many years in a lab ( research and clinical genetics) is pewter suitable for drinking out of?
Some advertize lead free pewter, but still.....It's glass for me.

I have a small porcelain bowl, white inside and about five inches across, that I use as a mazer. It allows for nice aeration when swallowing, and, when looking in in good light, the true color of the mead really comes through. I want to find another like it, only with a simple black ring or pattern inside on the white background. Sake is judged in cups with such patterns, because the dark on white contrast allows you to see the color even easier, and this method seems like it would work well for light-colored meads.

I do sincerely hope you have many friends that drop by extremely often. :D

I much prefer a wine glass, but must have large quanities to satisfy my acute desire for the fermented honey. Friends or no friends, I fear I must indulge.

Speaking of friends, I must chill a large bottle (or 4) for Tuesday night......
 
I drink mead out of anything, most of the time I use my pewter tankard, and once I get a drinking horn, I'll use that for mead. I also have a metal goblet for mead. Up until this week, I've had other people's meads, but my first mead is clear and ready to bottle. It's still young but really good, after taking the hydrometer reading, I poured it into a wine glass.
 
Most of the time I use a wine glass, the black late 19th c. glasses I have more then others. other then that water glass, coffee cup or from the bottle.

I love the color of Mead, so I use a wine glass almost identical to the one on the front of Compleat Meadmaker so that the light can shine through it. Beautiful.

Wine glass for me, though I don't always have one handy.

For those who say only a Celtic or Viking vessel is proper, remember that the speakers of Proto-Indo-European had a word for mead (*medhu), meaning it was being drunk six thousand years ago - and nobody has any idea what they were drinking it out of.
 
I think Oskaar had it right in his first post when he spoke of sitting with the lights off.

I have a large glass goblet that’s very large and can hold like a quarter of a bottle. And you can still swirl it like a wine glass best of both worlds that’s 187.5 ml and as much hold as a stein. Only problem is it getting warm to quick if you don’t drink it fast.

I have to agree though that I like glass over anything else that ive used. Metals seem to corrupt the taste and pottery seems to have poor texture. Never drunk out of a horn so I can’t say.

Why, however I can, of course! Anything from a clear lead crystal wine goblet down to a plastic cup are fine in a pinch, tho' I much prefer to see the mead as I drink it. So, anything that is basically clear, or has a shiny silver inner surface (such as some of the polished pewter vessels that I have for SCA style events) is fair game.
 
I can now say to have tried drinking mead from a horn!

A few weekends ago I was vending at a large pagan fest up here in the great white north of ontario. On a beautuful cool evening in the rolling wooded highlands with a clear, stary sky above and a fire with drumming and dancing nearby...I enjoyed a variety of mead and mead concoctions ( mead and flavored shimernof vodka being the scarryiest) and ciders from a drinking horn for the first time... I of course enjoyed my cycer the best, but it was an interesting experiance all round. Though many of the meads left me wanting in my opinion, I was thrilled to see how many people were trying out home brewing.

I very much enjoyed the communal nature of the horn it as it was passed around and around and as it enptied who ever was nearest would rinse it with some water and add new brew.

All I can say is now is that although drinking from a horn was very interesting and fun, for most other situations I believe a wine glass would suit me fine. It gives my drinking a certain civilized veneer ;)

When I made a Raspberry Melomel a couple of years agao (it was the only one out of three attempts that came out half decent), I drank it from a wine glass, because it was all I had. I like to eat bread with it and sometimes cheese. I've also found mysleg dipping the bread into the melomel on occasion.
 
See, now that's funny because we very often dip our bread in our wine at dinner both here and in Croatia.
