Thanks Pewter. I'll be there 2nd week, hopefully coming in Saturday sometime of the middle week. I'm pitching some new batches this week, using the fast stuff, so I'll have some yummies for the tasting, should I get there in time. I am attending at a friend's invitation, staying in her tent, so it really depends on what she has planned.

Vicky

Vicki,

Bring your friend as well. All it takes is a second batch for samples and both of you can attend. As War gets closer I will contact you again to see what your plans are.

Thanks,
Pewter

Pewter,
I'll be camping with the Kingdom of Northshield. That narrows it down right? I don't know when I'll arrive yet. I was unable to get friday off and may have to work Sat. as well. It's a long drive from Dubuque, Iowa. So tasting at 2 p.m. Sunday may not be possible for me, I will be bringing my 1st mead, 5 of 6 gallons of it anyway.

I will track you down for some informal tasting and from there you can help find Vicky so I may present her with a bottle. I'd like to Meet, Drink, and Feast with you both, I just don't think it will be Sunday.

This will be my first real event (several dozen Ren Faires excluded) so I haven't really a developed persona yet, just some period garb. Introductions and Invites... especially to feasts, campfires and joviality of all kinds will be greatly appreciated, and a great excuse to break out the mead.

Wrathwilde

Wrathwilde,

Very few people have "personaes" that differ significantly from themselves. They may claim so but most people are in a mode of "Pewter as a Gypsy" or "Pewter as an English Gentleman" where Pewter is constant, very much like his mundane person, and dresses period. Basically telling you not to sweat it...

Is your group on X-04? If so you have to walk about 20 feet to find me. We can even manage that after a few meads, right? ;D

Lookin' forward to seeing you there,
Pewter

Pewter,

On another thread you wrote -

"I went to Pennsic a little over a year ago and was adopted into a camp named De Londres. While not intending to insult anyone here, the two Barons of House De Londres are 2 of the top mead-makers in the world, if not the two finest. But I was ruined because House De Londres had three or four types of mead ON TAP for the entire week of War (Pennsic War). The 8 year old, aged on oak, Lingonberry mead I had that day was the best alcoholic beverage I had ever had (including all of the French wines, the mixed rum drinks, the cordials, etc.). So I leave War and return to Iowa, while the rest of De Londres returns to New York. No chance to brew (or drink) with them until next Pennsic because of the distances... *sigh*"

Do either of the Barons post on GotMead? I'd love to get their input on this forum if they did infact brew the finest beverage you've ever had.

Wrathwilde

Wrathwilde,

Unfortunately, neither of the Barons of House DeLondres post on Gotmead. However, I believe you have just as much expertice in people like Oskaar, Joe, and Dan as you have in the Barons. DeLondres is actually in X-05, right there with the solar showers in the Cooper's side yard. I have a big yellow and blue tent and generally hang around camp...

See you there,
Pewter

Hey guys!

Sounds like you're going to have a great time. Be safe, no meading and full contact swordplay! It would be great to hear about the meads that you taste and what you thought of them.

Cheers (come back in one piece)

But the paths they've walked down are undoubtedly different. It's not that the resources here are lacking, they are not at all. I would just be thrilled to observe the discussions between the Masters mentioned above and others who have mastered the craft. Similar to studying the Constitution then being invited to observe the actual deliberations of the founding fathers. The first may be what we live by but the second is far richer.

Wrathwilde

Wrathwilde,

Baron Steffan will not be attending this year due to conflicts. Baron Sean (the Laurel Master Brewer) will be at War for some limited time (Tuesday to Thursday of War week) due to young children needing a family vacation (Disneyworld). Our house party is Tuesday so things might be a bit rushed, but if you stop in Wednesday or Thursday we might have a chance to sit down and chat with him.

Peace,
Pewter

Wrath,

Do you think you could find the time to interview one or more of the SCA Brewmasters? If they don't post here, maybe we could get a touch of their experience into circulation by proxy! If there's no time at Pennsic, maybe you could arrange to contact them at another time. Possible questions might include methodology, recipes, philosophy behind the brewing, etc.

Great idea Bronx. It would be great to get their comments on how they use nuances to acheive a superior mead. If WrathWilde or Pewter could interview Baron Sean and post it here I know there would be many people that would like to see what they have to say and incorporate their techniques into their own methods.

Cheers,

Oskaar

lostnbronx,

Unlike many of the SCA veterans here, I am no war monger, I have the better part of 5 days to track down as many mead makers as I can. Can't think of a better way to (maybe) get invited to some awesome campfires, feasts and parties. I'll guarantee that even if I don't get to interview them I will get their contact #s & Emails and I'll invite them to join us on GotMead.

Don't worry friends...
"Robert's your Father's brother"
Thanks for the boot lostnbronx, I will start a new thread in the SCA files so you may all submit questions you'd like me to ask. Anything you're curious about I'll ask about. It doesn't matter if it's historic or modern, I'll try to get a little of their History/Philosophy/Yeast Preferences/Honey Varieties/Recipes if Willing/How they age... but I need more questions from all of you... GotMead Gods and newborns alike.

See "Questions for SCA Brewmasters" in the SCA Files.

Yes, but don’t take too long developing your name and persona... Or you may have one given to you by your household.

In recent years, after spending time as a Town Crier at Northern Faire, I’ve taken on the period sounding name of "Phillip Bodger". However, within local SCA circles, I’m still commonly referred to by the very non-period name "Gizmo" that was given to me by my household after running around nameless for a few seasons.

And yes, getting everyone to use the new name is a pain...=)

Michael

Michael,

You are right that there is a danger in going nameless. With me, Pewter is not a period name and cannot pass the scrutiny of the heralds. I will likely continue to go by Pewter even after I get an SCA name approved. Part of me wants to take a really, REALLY stupid society name so that it is easy to explain why I go by Pewter. Current choice is Peeter Thisblewhat... If I continued along those same lines I suppose I could go for Harold Scrotum, a pretty official sounding name. But then if your name was Harry..... wouldn't you go by Pewter too?!?! ::) ::) ::)

The problem is that you get called up in front of court using the official name and any awards or recognition are under that name as well. Not sure I want 500 people to hear me being called Harry... so for now it's just an unofficial Pewter.

Any suggestions?

My wife, until she finally chose an SCA name, was commonly referred to as "Fred" by some of our friends.

Val is actually the shortened version of m SCA name.

Not *officially* in the SCA (as yet) but when I go to events, I go by Molly Renwick.

Pewter,

I am not a herald, but here’s my thoughts...=)

In the Kingdom of the West, the difference between Renaissance Faire and SCA names is that Faire names tend to be more on the fanciful side, while SCA names tend to be more plausible names for the time period. (It’s not necessary to be documented that somebody did have the name, but at least prove that it’s plausible for somebody to have had it.)

With that in mind, your suggestions of "Peeter Thisblewhat" and "Harold Scrotum" tend to fall more on the fanciful side. While still somewhat commonly used in the SCA, I doubt that the Heralds would approve of such a name for "official" use.

My understanding is that Pewter, while probably not a common given name, is a period material.

Remembering that last/family names of the period were often descriptive and given based on job, location, etc...

Perhaps your back-story could be that you grew up in a town with two Michael Smiths. You’re one of them. (You could choose any name besides Michael Smith if you wanted, but say that there were two of you in town.) The other Michael Smith is the town Blacksmith; you are the town Pewtersmith. (Hence the last name Smith.) In order to tell the difference, the townsfolk decided to give you the nickname of "Pewter".

Any lurking heralds on here want to comment?

Michael

Michael,

Actually Peeter Thisblewhat is documentable from names on church registeries(sp?) during the late 1500's in England. I honestly believe it would be approved. Harry Scrotum was an example of a vulgar name no one would want to go by and may actually not be documentable. I intended it as a joke. BTW Woodcock is also documentable. I am sure there are many names with double meanings...

You really think Pewter could get through? My Shire's herald didn't think it would. If I could get it through I'd just go by Pewter fo Deodar...
