JamesB,
I've tasted a couple of Long Island's Dry Melomels (The Black Raspberry Mead and ??? ), I met the owner at Pennsic during Pewter's Mead Tasting. They were decent for commercial Meads... but the Homebrewer meads I had at Pennsic were far superior. I Would have liked to try the sweet & semi-sweet meads, as I felt that the two dry melomels I tasted needed some sweetness to bring out the fruit more.
Unfortunately he was competing against the house DeLondres' Black Raspberry melomel which is the second best Mead or Wine I've ever tasted, preceded only by the DeLondres' Blueberry Melomel. To my own credit, I still feel that my Honey Maple was a close runner up for 3rd.

Dunno, Wrath, you shoulda tasted Wulfgaard's Raspberry mead......LA was it good! Wulf gave me a small bottle to take home, and it was fab. DeLondres mead was awesome too, and I'm looking forward to sopping up some more next year, while trading Pewter some of mine.....

Your maple was to die for. Didja save a bottle to enter next year?

I will be attending Brewer's Collegium, hosted by House DeLondres, sometime in February (date TBD). I hope to be able to get Magnus (owner of Long Island Meadery and a member of House DeLondres) to send/bring a couple of bottles of his sweeter melomels. I pretty much agree with Wrathwilde on his take on the dry stuff from L.I.Meadery.

I suppose I could add that I could taste the quality of the mead in the samples Magnus brought to the tasting. The clarity, legs, mouthfeel, and all those sorts of things were what I would expect with a high quality mead. But the melomel I tasted (I believe it was a strawberry/raspberry combo) cried out for a little sweetness to enhance/bring out the fruit flavors that were there but only subtly so. The aroma was also pleasant but way too subtle for what I like. I do imagine that someone that likes dry stuff would really like the meads we tasted...

I suppose I have been ruined by DeLondres mead from the two Barons where the fruit flavor grabs you by the throat and shakes you as you drink it... well sorta...

I just wanted to point out that both the meads that Wrathwilde mentioned were only about 10 months old. I wish that we were going to have those same batches on tap this next War after a year more aging!

I just wanted to add that, as a former New Yorker, I was quite interested in trying out some of LIM's products. Paul R. Holm (the owner's real world name) was quick to respond to my inquiries, but, unfortunately, I live in a state he can't ship to at this time. He's working on getting national distribution right now, so maybe in the near future this will change.

Paul comes across as a very nice guy with a real dedication to mead as a business. I look forward to someday sampling his meads. He'll be at the Meadfest in Boulder this February, so anyone curious can check out his stuff there.

Alas, the maple is gone... only one bottle still in existence, but it's not in my possession. More batches on the way though... using DV-10 instead of EC-1118.

I took the hike out from NJ to visit the Long Island Meadery last weekend. It was definitely I trip I plan on making again in the future. They make some really excellent meads and are very friendly and knowledgeable. I especially enjoyed their peach melomel and would recommend their products to anyone interested in trying some really nice meads.
