Heya,

looks like there's no thread yet in this forum about commercial mead brands available in Germany, eh? Aaaaalrighty, let's start one (whoever else may participate here ;) ).

My rather local forays (Northern Germany, federal country of Nethersaxony) showed me two widely available mead brands so far. First is "Katlenburger", not too powerful and moderately sweet, but quite affordable - around € 2.20 per 0.7 liter bottle. The other brand - my favorite - is "Bärenmet", quite strong and sweet, unfortunately also costly, for about € 6.00 per bottle - same size.

Actually, I recycle Bärenmet bottles for my own stuff. ;)

Hej Thur!!

Any chance of you posting a coupl-ah digi-pics of those mead bottles for us to take a gander at? I've never heard of either of those meads, and I'm really curious to see what they look like. Also, it would be great if you could review each of them in the Commercial Mead Reviews section for all of us. That way we can get a good idea of what they're all about, and what they look like!

Cheers,

Oskaar

Unfortunately I don't have any bottles ready at the moment to take a pic of - except for those empty "Bärenmet" bottles which wait to be filled with the results of my latest batch, and without all the labels I think a pic isn't too useful.
Katlenburger comes in pretty standard bottles - no special features at all - while Bärenmet at least has an outstanding design - the bottles themselves look kind of like pieces of masonry (like a brick wall, so to say) with a plug reminding of a beehive.
I'll post some pics of the original bottles, with labels and all, as soon as I have some. ;D

Of course I don't have many other mead brands to compare them to... but in due time I think I'll do that. Thanks for pointing me toward that. ;)

Duh.

Yup, that's them. I so wanted to make some pics myself, the option to google for the requested images didn't even occur to me :P

A bit more Googling turned up this:
http://www.met-honigwein-shop.de/index.html?target=dept_94.html

They've got 12 meads listed. If anyone can help me find the info for the wineries they come from, I'll put up their contact stuff in the Commercial Meadery list here:
http://www.gotmead.com/component/option,com_contxtd/Itemid,75/

I just added Katlenburger to the meadery list, and am hunting the others.....

Thurisaz, if you can help me on the translations from the page at the top of my post, I'd love to get those meads listed....

I'll have a look into that, just can't tell you when exactly. Rest of this week will be kind of busy... but then, I'm on vacation for three weeks after that, so... ;D

Eh, no worries. Enjoy your holiday!

For the sake of fairness, that was my personal choice of holidays. It's getting kind of a tradition for my wife and me... you see, her birthday is April 21st (yes, tomorrow... so don't ask why I probably won't post then ;D ), mine is May 9th, with Beltane - May 1st, for those who aren't into the Celtic calendar - fitting inbetween the dates damn well. So there's really three celebrations for us, or rather three good reasons for celebrations (and for a mass-devouring of the golden nectar of the Gods ;D ).
If I think of it tomorrow, I'll add another commercial German mead brand to the list. It's not commonly available in stores, but it can be ordered easily... and it's mindblowingly good if you ask us. 8)

Heya Vicky,

looks like (after much trouble - you didn't think I could relax during my holidays did you? >:( ) I can finally check out the webpage you stated above tommorrow. Do you want me to post the translations of the mead brands listed on that page in this thread, or somewhere else?

I'll send it to an email address as well, if you give me one ;D

Heya Thurisaz,

You can post here, 'cause I'm sure others will be interested, and if you don't mind, shoot it to me at gotmead@gotmead.com, and I'll add the info to the meadery list...

Glad you had a holiday, even if it was (as usual) not as relaxing as we would like (mine all seem to be that way too)

Heya,

here's another good brand of mead available in Germany. Watch out for this label:

MetWHSchwarz.jpg

(I'd have preferred a helmet without those nonsensical horns, but you can't have everything 8) )

You don't normally find it in many stores, but it can be ordered (Address below). It's a damn good stuff as far as we (my wife and I) can tell, and considering what an acute sense of smell and taste she has, I dare say this means something ;D

Want to order, or to ask whether they will ship some to you? Here's the contact:

Weinhandlung Schwarz
Aueweg 2
30900 Wedemark/GERMANY

Phone: +49-5130-2815

Email: info@wein-schwarz.de (I have no idea how well they can process mails in English though...)

Enjoy! ;D
