Ok.. Heather and I have been making mead for over a year now.. and have had great success.. we always filter our meads through the Vinbrite system.. its a gravity feed system and has always worked in the past.. but while nothing in our recipes have changed.. the filter slows to almost a non existent trickle... has anyone played with using a powered pump to help move liquid.. like maybe an aquarium pump or something.. I do NOT want to drop 500 on the fancy wine vacuum systems..
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated...

If you pressure your mead through the filter substarte it will just blow all the particles you are trying to filter right past the filter and you won't accomplish anything. You can get a Buonvino for less than $200 and they work fabulously. I have 2 of them.

got mead live radio talk show covered filtration, from a profession perspective yet practically informative: 2-21-17 Shauna LeFave – Mythic Mead – Filtration, Cold Crashing and Mead without Added Sulfites

if I recall correctly, yes they were filtering yeast, down at about 8u (10u? 5u? hmmm?), I think. any smaller a filter and there is flavor, other loss.

but practically, I think it would eliminate racking all together. pitch - ferment - filter - bottle - age.

and as in the show's title, "without added sulphites".

You can't filter a cloudy mead. It needs to be clear first. Unless you have a crossflow filter. They start around 30K. Home brewer filters can't filter small enough to get all the yeast. So unless you have a professional unit you can't do as spoken of Trenchie.

I have looked at the Buonvino systems.. but we filter about 2 gallons per filter batch.. the over head for pads would kill us.. those damn pads are expensive...

I get 12 gallon a set. You need to let it clear from age, or us fining agents first. If you're only getting 2 gallons you must be running dirty mead through it.
