Mead in Ireland?

I'm considering moving to Dublin, Ireland, because I can (probably) get a job at the university there. I've done a few google searches to find out about mead and meadmaking in Ireland. Bunratty showed up a lot, but otherwise I've found very little. Does anybody here know about other commercial meaderies or have information about the home meadmaking culture in Ireland??

I'm afraid there may not be much more than that. To the best of my knowledge, there are no commercial meaderies in Ireland other than Bunratty, which isn't a true mead.

Wine Spectator ran an article quite a few years back on Irish mead. The author had much the same to say.

I haven't heard anything back just yet.

I'd suggest checking out available beekeeping associations in the Republic of Ireland. Wherever there are beekeepers, there's sure to be meadmakers to be found. Try this site for starters:

and see what's out there.

So, what kind of position are you thinking of taking up in Dublin? Are you up on your Irish? ;D

My own family line is from East Inishowen, also the Republic of Ireland.

Lecturer at the University College Dublin. I've been to Ireland once, just for the job interview... At least I speak a little English ;)
