Has anyone ever found Mead for sale in New York City, or Northern NJ? I've been to countless liquor stores and I've found it for sale once. Two old dusty bottles of Christmas Mead that i picked up in February of 2007.

Mostly when I go to a liquor store they stare at me funny and go 'Mead, what's that?'

Is this a typical reaction?

Yeah, thats typical. You will have better luck in large wine stores like Total Wine, or in eclectic little wine shops. Some of the most interesting meads I've found are often in stores...

For ethnic meads, hit the neighborhood shops that serve that ethnic group. I found some really *excellent* tej in Little Ethiopia in Washington, D.C. I expect the Ethiopian areas in NYC are the same. Likewise hit the Irish and Polish areas, you'll likely find some from that area being sold in their local stores. The best tej I ever had was sold to me by this guy who was sitting on the stoop of a building housing an Ethiopian shop. The owner recommended him. The mead came in an unmarked bottle wrapped in a paper bag.....

Near NYC, about an hour from the city is Brotherhood Wines, which has a decent mead:

Also in NY:

Long Island Meadery
1347 Lincoln Av Suite 11
Holbrook, NY 11741

Tell Paul Holm, the owner, that you're a Gotmeader. Paul has a large variety of meads, in all sorts of flavors, ranging from very dry to sweet. Try the root beer mead if you're feeling adventurous, its neat!!

Earle Estates Meadery
Rt 1, Box 246, Tucker Hill Rd
Locke, NY 13092

In New Jersey:

Saba Tej (Organic Honey Wine) Co.
15 Park Avenue
Rutherford, NJ 07070
Araya Selassie
phone: 888-772-2283 (tell him Vicky Rowe sent you, he may remember me)

The tri-state area seems to be a bit of a vast wasteland when it comes to mead sellers and homebrew shops. There are a few, but tough to find.

I'm planning on taking a drive to the Long Island one at some point.

From what I understand Saba Tej is closed, but it may have simply been when I called. I'll have to check in and see if they are still open!

The Hop Devil Grill, a Manhattan beer bar, sells meads from the L.I. Meadery. Supposedly, they've developed 'mead-tinis' with them.

In NY, I'm pretty sure that would depend on the alcohol content. Not sure at what percentage it starts, but higher ABV beverages, like mead (and wine), can only be sold at liquor stores in NY. Maybe you could find something in the typical "beer range" of 4-7% at these stores, but anything much higher than that I doubt you'll find anywhere but liquor stores. Or at the meadery itself!

Don't know the alcohol content, but I found the t'ej in local shops...

Hey, I never got over to your camp at Pennsic, we need to talk chai mead! I really want to see that one happen....I was going to try a 1 gal batch and see if I can get the flavor right so I could send you a bottle. But meanwhile, I recommend you get some Orgeon Chai (purple box, in the grocery store) and try that. It will give you a start.

Let me know what you find out, so I can make sure their listing is updated....

I've passed by the address, but never seen any evidence of an actual business. One of these days I will have to actually stop in and find out what's going on there!

Lowery Liquors

If anyone's still interested, these guys here had several types of Redstone Meadery last time I checked. There in Queens though.

Mead in NYC...

These are the stores that usually have it:
Chelsea Wine Vault

they have other meads that are not on their website too.

The Ginger Man is a bar that serves mead-

there is also Manhattan Meadery. They also have a good list of stores and/or bars that sell it:

In Jerz:
The buyrite in Hoboken/JC carries the Viking Blood line and a few others too if memory serves me right.

Washington Liquors on Washington St in Hoboken sells Honeyrun’s Ragnar’s Reserve. For $13 a bottle I bought one, but have yet to try it.
