I use KMB to keep my mead sterile both during the ferment and after. I'm comfortable calculating the impact of a given dose on incremental ppm of free SO2, calibrated to pH. In the past, I've used a conservatively large dose at the outset (4-5 g per 6.5 gallon batch) and then a small dose (~1.25 g per 6 gallon batch) at the end when the mead is ready for storage (pH ~3.0 - 3.3). I've done no refreshing between start and finish.

What I don't do yet is monitor free SO2 levels. It seems that this would have benefits. For example, I think I could get away with a smaller initial dose, but I'd only reduce the dose if I could monitor SO2 levels and refresh if necessary. So my question is:

For those who monitor SO2, how do you do it?

I'd prefer an instrument but don't want to spend more than $100. My next best option seems to be test strips but they seem imprecise. Suggestions?
