I just got this e-mail from the boy in Norge:

So I just got done brewing a pumpkin spice ale. I missed my OG by a few points but considering this was a pretty complicated recipe I'm happy with the results.

I've been meaning to brew a special beer for Thanksgiving and thought it would be fun to brew a pumpkin ale. I've been spending the last couple of weeks looking online at different techniques and recipes and decided to make my own recipe by stealing from others. So far I'm pretty happy with the results. I kid you not--it smells just like a pumpkin pie right now. It's hard to comment on the taste yet because it's still petty sweet but I feel like I can detect the subtleties of the different ingredients I put in there. I'll know better in a week or so when I can do a first tasting. I've taken a few pictures which I'll put on the blog tomorrow.

6.00 lb of US Pale Ale Malt
1.00 lb of Belgian Vienna Malt
1.00 lb of Belgian Pale Wheat Malt
1.00 lb of US Flaked Barley
0.50 lb of German Melanoidin Malt
0.25 lb of US Caramel 40L Malt
0.20 lb of UK Black Malt
.350 lb of Brown Sugar

18 g of US Galena (60 Min From End)
33 g of UK Fuggle (15 Min From End)
28 g of German Northern Brewer (1 Min From End)

10 g of Orange Peel, Bitter
1 tsp of Ground Cinnamon
1/4 tsp of Nutmeg
4-5 lb of pumpkin

Wyeast 1098-British Ale

After more than 10 hours brewing this, I think it's time for me to relax!

This is the second batch he's done over there. The first one's not done yet, but when it is I predict he'll be very popular.

My sister did ask him if he could sell his beer over there or if there was loads of red tape like there is here, and he answered
Hehe, Norway is one big piece of red tape. There are drug dealers who sell openly in public and the police don't do anything because they don't have anywhere to put them. If I were to sell something really harmful like beer without collecting and paying taxes--now that's a crime worth going after.

In any event, i don't have plans to sell any of it. We're gonna have a Thanksgiving dinner and I thought it would be fun to serve it then.
I think so, too.

/motherly fatuousness

now that looks tasty!

I've been thinking about breaking into GF beers and braggots more and a pumpkin braggot is high on the list (right after the big black stout braggot)

Norway ? red tape when it comes to alcohol? No no, I won't hear of it......;););)

Erm? am I right in recalling that the person who came up with the idea of prohibition was of Norwegian, or at least Scandanavian decent ?????

The price of a decent drink in most of Scandanavia (including Iceland), is more than the GDP of a smallish African country!

p.s. and of course, it's fine for mothers to have a bit of a parental boast....

How else to pay for everything they supposedly "do" for you over there?! Gotta tax the sins, baby, because nobody can complain, I guess. :P
