A few months ago I bought about 10lbs of honey from the local grocery store. The cashier was an older woman and she commented on how much honey I had and asked if I was making something. I explained what mead was and my plans for my current batches and she said, "Hmm... maybe I should card you for that then." I assumed she was joking, laughed, and went on my merry way.

I went back to that same store yesterday to buy more honey for new batches (this time I only had six pounds). When I went through checkout, they asked for my ID. Since all I had was the honey, I was pretty confused and asked why. The cashier said that it was a new policy that anyone buying more than 5lbs of honey had to be carded because they could be using it to make alcohol. Apparently, the cashier from the first time went to her manager and explained what I told her. This gave me a good laugh, and I thought I'd share.

Well shoot, you can make alcohol out of bread. "Are you old enough to eat that roll?" What if I buy bread yeast? I could be a moonshiner...

I honestly don't know whether I go through more sugar with winemaking or with jams and jellies, but that really is nanny-state behaviour... and you 'Mericans call us the socialists ;D Wonder if the woman was some kind of anti-alcohol tee-totaller or something...

This is as retarded as the fact that you get carded in WalMart for buying glue, paint, or basically anything you might be able to huff. BUT, you don't get carded for buying a knife or any potential weapon. Which could I do more damage with?

Personally, I would have lodged a complaint. (It's probably illegal to card you for the honey anyway.) If we don't start complaining, they'll be policing everything on us. "I'm sorry miss, it's not healthy to buy so much junk food. We'll have to have you sign for that."

I wonder if they will start carding anybody who buys more than 5 pounds of sugar? Or more than ten pounds of any kind of fruit? Or many amount of fruit juice?

Scary (or perhaps, moronic) indeed!

I tried to explain this time that you can ferment pretty much anything, and all I got was a blank stare.

She probably was. You would be surprised just how many people still think Prohibition should be a thing.

That's a good idea should it happen again. I was just so flustered by it that I didn't even think of that.

That is funny... my LHBS had to put in a new entrance because their old one was through a tobacco shop; no one under 19 can enter the tobacco shop, but they can sell wine and beer supplies to any one. I suppose they should start restricting the use of cocoa- and capsaicin- containing products because of their addictive (and endorphin-producing) nature. But it's OK to put fluoride and chlorine in our drinking water supply! grrrrrr... this can really get me going.. >:(

How about "I like to be sticky"? Chances are good no one will probe into that any further.

Especially if you mumble slightly and look away, embarrassed... Or look 'em straight in the eye and say it nice and loud.

The lady who owns the apiary I frequent is a teetotaller (and also doesn't have honey because she's deathly allergic to bee stings) but thinks it's neat that I ferment it, and since I don't come in acting like a raving drunk, she must be OK with it...

Go back to the store, get a shopping cart, put about 20 - 30 jars in the cart but drop one to break a couple, let it run out the bottom while walking to the cashier making sure you go down as many aisles as possible, then if you get to pay just apologise, if you get the card sh1te, just bitch about their appalling and unconstitutional company and walk.

It'll take them ages to clean it up and cause them loads of hassle either way...

You know it's funny, I've brought this up with my old boss. We brewed at his house and he asked if his 3-year-old son could help. I told him the only thing a minor can't legally do is pitch the yeast. Everything before that is just sugar water. Rather amusing...

I'd opt for saying that in a slightly creepy, childlike way. They'll conjure their own image, one that requires two gallons of mind-bleach to clear.

I think it would be a shorter list if I tried to name the grocery store items that I could NOT turn into alcohol or use to get high.

I was thinking exactly this. I mean, a couple gallons of apple juice for my niece's birthday party, a few pounds of fruit to make pies, a bag of SUGAR for baking...all could easily become booze.
