Hey everyone. I'm completely new to both GM and making mead in general. I am currently working on my very first batch (JAOM with black tea instead of raisins, seemed like a pretty straightforward and simple mead to start with) using a very simplistic method that I learned from watching my stepfather make homemade wine. Eventually, as I get better and braver, I'd like to try to recreate the "Mead of Inspiration" (or "Mead of Poetry" depending on whether you're reading Nordic or Celtic lore) I have a general idea for the ingredients based on availability in those regions, time period, cultural importance, and supposed effect. My question is about woods for aging/conditioning. Have any of you tried woods beyond Oak? I think I've heard mention of Cherry and Acacia with mead, but what about things like Alder, Birch, vine woods, Rowan, Hawthorn, Willow, or even some more exotic stuff like Bubinga or Brazilian Rosewood? If so, what effects did it have on your mead?
