A pretty big change from recent norms, but I think you'd find that the early history of this country provides evidence of a similar growth in independent philosophical thought around 200 years ago. Once those American colonies that became the US gained their independence, folks began questioning in earnest all the organized religions of the day, and lots of fringe "cults" sprang up and existed for a little while - although most weren't quite as into mysticism as are some of what we are seeing develop these days - back in the early 1800's they tended to at least use mainstream Protestant Christian thought as a jumping off point. Of course several of them endured a few generations, and they form the basis for a couple of our modern "established" religious denominations.
Some of those offshoot "cults" did pretty darned well I'd say, looking at the absolutely startling growth and spread of Mormanism.
