PH balance strips question

One more rookie question (for now) ;D

I just bought some ph strips to measure the level of my peach mel. The strips I got were for measurements between 2.8 and 4.0 I think. The color on my strip came out as brown which does not register with the colors within the 2.8 and 4.0 range. The 2.8 is a yellow/greenish. I put one in plain water and it came out as purple.
I did read a thread similar to this a few weeks back but can't find it now.
Is this a problem?

No I didn't. You mean vinegar mixed with a little water or pure vinegar?

I did try the mead before adding the puree and it didn't taste tart or anything, so I don't think there should be an issue...

You can mix it with a little water and that will not shift the pH much.

I dipped my stick (giggity) in a little cider vinegar (all I have) and water and it came out light brownish :/

Your strips may be old.

Not sure if this will help, but I had the same problem with my pH strips, and then noticed on the instructions that you were only supposed to dip the strip in the liquid for 1-2 seconds. It has been a while, but if I recall correctly, I started getting readings on the chart when I dipped the strip very quickly.

If you have been leaving the strip in the liquid longer, you might try once more with a quick in-and-out.

I hope we were talking about pH strips and mead, although I really need to watch what I type. CG's post made me laugh out loud when I saw the quotes.

Let me know if you had any luck. I know that I had a similar problem when I first used my pH strips; but I am sure I eventually got readings on the scale.
