I just thought I'd join the forums and post a greeting here. My name is Paul (known in the SCA as Lord Alden Drake) and I live in Houston, Texas (Barony of the Stargate, Kingdom of Ansteorra). I'm still relatively new to making mead. I started my first batch (a pear melomel) in April '04. I've since started a strawberry melomel and just recently a blackberry melomel. Gotmead.com has been a great source of information and inspiration while getting started. I look forward to meeting other SCA (and non-SCA) folks on here and learning more (and sharing what I've learened).

Welcome to the Forum! Do you ever make it to Pennsic? We had a lot of fun there this year and have much bigger plans for next year... Including mead making classes at Pennsic. Any annual SCA events in Texas that you frequent and could recommend to others in your area?

I haven't made it to Pennsic yet, but I'm hoping to get there eventually. I grew up just a couple hours north of Pennsic, but that was long before learning of the SCA. Such a pity. :(

There are some scattered brewing/vinting competitions around the local branches of Ansteorra. I'll try to track some down and post the information here. I believe there's also a competition held at Gulf War each year. A number of brewers/vintners around here will occasionally enter their products in general A&S competitions if there isn't a Brewing/Vinting competition, but most folks are just happy to share their brews socially (at taverns, bardic circles, encampments, etc.). A barony not too far from me has a brewer's guild that seems to meet fairly regularly. One of these days I hope to get down there.

*waves* Hi, Alden! I'm not in the SCA (got caught by Amtgard first), but I'm in Houston, too. :) Once I've got something old enough to bottle, maybe we can give each other's a taste :)

Greetings!

I belong to The Kingdom of DragonWynde (no, we're not SCA. We're more of a fantasy group with strong Norse and Celtic roots and we try to be as period as possible). I'm known as Duchess Mistress Nyx Medusa.

I missed the mead making class presented by the SCA at the last ICON (3/06). I'm just starting out on making mead for our events and all around fun. No one else in the group has taken the plunge so here and the SCA pages are where I'm turning for guidence. So I have my hopes of becoming BrewMistress of DragonWynde.
