Since this thread has gotten gone so very far astray from the original post, I figure I'll just ask this here whilst I have you attention: Can someone direct me to a good introduction to making a yeast starter? Webpage, online video, book, whatever. Even though I'm a month away from tasting my first batch I'm already dreaming of my next one and I want make a starter for the yeast next time.

Thanks for all the info. I was already on Jamil's page when I posted the request. I've been listening to archives of The Brewing Network and Basic Brewing Radio for months getting ready for my first brew.
 
Those things are great, though much better if you're drinking. They tend to wander off topic...
 
My ipod is loaded up with them to listen to while i'm driving or cooking...and i just about always drink while doing the latter...
