Hi All, Been going through the posts hoping not to ask the same question. So if you have been there before feel free to direct me where the answer is already rather than repeat yourself. I understand how tedious that can be.
I've recently subscribed to a herbalism course that requires for one element making mead - I've noticed as scrolling through the coursework.
I've been Vegan since 1992, my children all their lives, it is intrinsic to who we are and yes, we don't have honey.
I'm not here to berate anyone about beekeeping, nor get into a debate about me not consuming honey, I literally am just looking for ingredient info.
Can I substitute something else for the honey?
I understand mead is all about the honey and I'm sorry for asking in that sense. I imagine you have had this question too much already and if so, I empathise with that, so please if you know a keyword to a thread please direct me so if that's easier.
I understand too that there are qualities sought in the honey that may be not present in alternatives. But here is where we are.
I saw mention of maple syrup on one thread. I am new to this just spotted the issue on the coursework.
Classically we would use maple syrup, dates (whizzed up), brown rice syrup or coconut sugar instead of honey or sugar. Sugar omission not a vegan thing, just dietary as we're not big sugar heads and like our nutritious dried fruit and treats made from it, whereas sugar doesn't offer us as much nutritionally.
Focusing on the ingredient question, do we reckon maple syrup would be the way to go? Or brown rice syrup? We tend to blend dates ourselves rather than go with date syrup if going down the date road as less processed but only some recipes can handle that. I'm guessing that mead wouldn't be one of those. But I am super new at making mead. This is my first foray - here.
Thank you for your time in answering this and again, apologies if this is one of 'those questions' you get on here all the time.
Kind regards, Dee
