I always thoroughly degas first an add them one sprinkle at a time. This still happens from time to time, though. Especially if there's something in the must that holds a more stable foam, like apple or grape juice.
I think another solution is simply to mix and dissolve any granular matter in water before you add it to the mead. The rough surface of any crystal or grain is going to nucleate the CO2. Dissolving the material in water and adding the dissolved matter means that there are no nucleation points - and so no volcanoes...
After having to clean up a mess from a 1 gallon and 5 gallon carboy despite the fact that I degas and dissolve the Fermaid in water before adding, I go to sink with one gallon batches and to a large towel inside a plastic tub for 5 gallons. Unless I'm in a bucket for a large batch then it never happens.
