Getting a loan

So, you think you can get a loan in today's 'financial market' (you are dreaming)

Getting a loan for a business is different than one for yourself. I tried seeking 15k in a loan, wasn't even asked for an application, because the business hadn't been running for more than 6 months. (6 months MIGHT get your permit, never-mind operating)

So, what you would be trying to do, is gather the 'books' from the business you are about to buy, and prove to the bank that it has been EXTREMELY profitable over the last 3 years, then you need to show them how you will make money for yourself, and pay the loan back. Then they might fill out the paperwork.

If you don't already own a business, it is excruciating hard to get a loan right now for anything. If you already own something and need interim capital to keep the doors open, money is falling from the sky, otherwise you are locked out.

Not sure how the real-estate aspect of this deal would contribute, but honestly, I wouldn't expect a bank to take a risk on this type of deal right now. They wouldn't take a risk on me, and I had cash as collateral. Go figure.

I do find it highly unlikely that I'd be able to convince a profit-oriented company to loan me money. I'm 28 and finally entered the world where I get a paycheck, so my personal collateral is close to zero. With a job like I have now I'm sure I could get a home loan, but moving to TN would eliminate my income and I'd be stuck, even for a loan to me. What I need is a one or more private individuals who think I can pay them back eventually by following some pipe dream in Appalachia. Sound like anyone(s) we know? ;)

Even when the banks were handing out money, the small business I used to work for was grossing around a million a year and profiting about $70k (S corp, owner takes all profits) in 06 and 07. He tried to get a credit line at his bank and several other banks for $50k just so he could float expenses and expand his business, and the only way they would do it was by giving him a second mortgage/heloc on his house, in his name. Noone would touch the "business" part of it, despite being in business with profit for 6 years.

Along with IanB, I can't imagine an insitution making a loan for that. You'll need an angel investor, or money from the local community/city council. A friend of mine started a project several years ago with money from the township to open an art studio.

I recently watched the Ben and Jerry's documentary on CNBC, how they started it grass-roots and grew over time. It is definately inspiring for any entrepreneur to watch that.

So whatever happened? Is it still around? Did they build a bunch of condos on the land? IS THE MEAD STILL THERE????

Interesting review. She does say the SELECTION was wonderful but nothing about the mead. I certainly wouldn't have sat at an empty bar for 10 minutes without saying something. Regardless and predictably, reported closed.

Yes! And see if the mead is still there. They are listed as "closed" but the inventory might still be quietly aging. If it's still there we might be able to do a few weekend "popups" with some marketing and even though we probably won't make a profit, we would have a lot of fun that pays for itself!

Well I may get to Pigeon Forge during the summer break. If it's within an hour or two drive I can investigate.

Shady Grove had some really good meads too. Their pineapple melomel was amazing. I've been watching them for the last several years as they tried to keep it going, and it's sad to see.

And I've seen a lot of meaderies go belly up because they did just that, bought the fantasy, without having a good plan and goal of what they plan to achieve. I work with helping small businesses to create a viable business and growth path in my Real Job (tm), and over the years have seen so many small meaderies get gone because they had amazing mead recipes, but couldn't keep the business coming in to support the costs.

I really have to finish that meadery growth consulting program I'm working on......

Do you have the pineapple melomel recipe you can share with us? Also, it would be cool to (continue to) have a list of Mazer Cup winners and their recipes (if they are public). I had the past thread in my favorites here, but can't find where that went (yet).

Commercial meaderies don't give out their recipes, so no.

We never posted Mazer Cup recipes, they belong to the owners. I remember that we did have one posted because they ended up being interviewed by a magazine, but we've don't have any recipes from any entrants, and never did. The only info we have is the description that entrants give, and we don't give that out. The winner list is always posted at http://www.mazercup.com after the competition is over.

There are a few exceptions to the point that Vicky made, but they are only because some of the winners in competitions like the Mazer Cup are also contributors to sites like GotMead, and we're willing to share info. The MCI does not require that anyone hand over a recipe as part of entering, and no BJCP sanctioned competition will do so. The commercial guys regard their individual recipes as trade secrets, and they have every right to do so.

Yes, of course, I realize there is no obligation to reveal a mead log, but some have been willing to share and give us amateurs from around the globe a chance to duplicate award winning procedures, ingredients etc. While I recognize and acknowledge that the commercial meaderies may not want to reveal the formula (like Coca-Cola), I am grateful for those that DO share, and don't want those pearls of expertise to get lost.

This property was sold. I actually made a trip past there to see about it and it appears to be something completely different now. Sad that it could not be saved. I was just talking to a local Knoxville liquor shop owner who said he missed their mead.
