Well I had the chance to go out and pick up some local craft beer this weekend and try it, heres what I ended up trying:

Heavy Seas:
Hop^3 IPA
Uber Pils
Gold Ale
Pale Ale

Flying Dog:
Doggie Style = Classic Pale Ale
Old Scratch = Amber Lager
Snake Dog = IPA
Road Dog = Porter
Tire Bite = Golden Ale
In-Heat Wheat = Hefe Weizen
Raging Bitch = Belgium Pale Ale

DogFish Head:
Chateau Jiahu

Rogue: (not local)
First Growth Creek Ale = Brewed with Cherries
 
So, what did you think of Dogfish Head's Chateau Jiahu? The idea of recreating ancient brews really captured my attention ever since seeing a special on Egypt where they tried to recreate a recipe they found for a corn based beer. They used Guinness' master brewer and they found the finished product to be sweet but good. The Chateau Jiahu seems like it would be even more sweet and wine/mead like than beer, but you cant deny the awesomeness of recreating a 9000 year old recipe!
 
It's been done! Try a forum search for the results, although if I remember right, you may need Patron status to see it.

BTW, I was the one who did it... and that was even before I knew that Dogfish Head had done Ch. Jiahu.

FWIW, my planned "taste off" of my Wolf Moon vs. Ch. Jiahu hasn't happened yet (I'm way too busy to just sit down and drink mead with friends these days), so I'm bringing the bottles to the Mazer Cup with me, and anyone interested can get with me (day/time is TBD), and we can try two different takes on this ancient discovery! ;D
 
Personally the Chateau Jiahu was my favorite out of the different beers I tried that day. I really like how there was a strong honey flavor/presence, nice malty richness with a little acidity from the grape juice, perfect amount of sweetness for my palate, balanced with the slightest hopiness. I thought it was really well balanced and represented all of the ingredients very well. i would like to try Waynes recipe but I am only extract brewing right now so hopefully when I finally start all-grain I'll be able to give it a try.

That is one full weekend of tasting! What do you think of the Flying Dog? I've had maybe a third of that list but never in a concentrated lump. I can remember thinking "ok, but I'm not buying another one". Their labels are a little...manic.

And Wayne I'm totally going to beg, borrow, or steal my way into that taste-off. I tried Dogfish's version at a bar and was mostly overcome by grapey sweetness.

Man, this does make me wish I was going even more. Wayne, I read your brewlog for Wolf Moon and I am curious if you are still seriously considering doing this in a completely neolithic manner for your second run (hollowed log fermenter/hot stones for temp control/etc)? I know you mentioned thinking about it, but that has to be a huge undertaking.
